FINE CHINESE DINING
'A wonderful adventure in fine dining" - Danny
Hall Of Fame
Steve Stein
I Contributing Writer
T
he application deadline for nomi-
nees for the 2015 class of the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame isn't far away.
It's April 1. No fooling.
Applications for athletes and non-
athletes are on the Michigan Jewish
Sports Foundation's website at www.
michiganjewishsports.org .
The not-for-profit foundation runs the
Hall of Fame. It oversees the nomination
and selection process and hosts an annual
induction dinner each fall.
The 31st annual dinner will be held in
October at the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
Foundation Executive Director David
Blatt said he's impressed each year with
the quality of the Hall of Fame nominees
considered by the selection committee.
He's also gratified when there are
nominees whose athletic careers were
sidetracked or halted by military ser-
vice, family obligations or an injury.
In other words, circumstances beyond
their control.
"Not everyone has the same opportuni-
ties:' he said.
Another important consideration for
him is inducting those who are still alive
so their family and friends can celebrate
the honor with them.
Here are some facts to consider for
those thinking about nominating them-
selves or someone else for the Hall of
Fame.
Athletes and non-athletes must have at
least one Jewish parent, consider himself
or herself to be Jewish, and/or have com-
pleted conversion.
Also, nominees must have been born
and/or raised in Michigan, or spent no
less than four years in the state.
To be considered for induction, an ath-
lete must have accomplished at least one
of the following:
• Elected into the major hall of fame in
his/her sport.
• Recognized in Michigan for making a
significant contribution in his/her sport.
• Won a national or world champion-
ship or major title in his/her sport.
• Had a successful career as a profes-
sional athlete.
• Won a Division 1 high school state
championship in Michigan in his/her
sport.
• Received Division 1 all-state honors
in Michigan for his/her sport (all-region,
all-metro, all-county, all-area and all-
conference also are considered).
• Drafted as a professional athlete in
his/her sport.
• Received a college scholarship in his/
her sport (NCAA Division I, Division II or
Division III, junior college or NAIA).
• Been a premier high school athlete
who could not continue in his/her sport
because of circumstances above and
beyond his/her control, such as war or an
injury.
The Hall of Fame has a veterans com-
mittee, similar to the National Baseball
Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Here's how it gets involved in the selec-
tion process:
Nominees not picked for induction by
the selection committee are placed on
the following year's ballot. If not elected
for seven years, the nominee becomes
eligible for selection by the veterans
committee.
The foundation board of directors can
choose one person each year for induc-
tion based on a recommendation from
the veterans committee.
Applications have room for background
information, accolades and references,
and places to note if foundation board or
committee members are related to the
nominee and if the nominee has been
convicted of a major crime.
Transparency is crucial in the nomina-
tion and selection process.
Newspaper articles and videos about
the nominee can be submitted with appli-
cations, which must be sent to the foun-
dation in the mail or filed electronically.

Is He Or She Jewish?
"I wonder if he's Jewish:"
That question is asked occasionally
when Jews watch a college or professional
athlete compete on television or read
about the athlete in the media. Coaches
and team officials also are fair game.
The answer isn't always clear. For
instance, New England Patriots star and
Super Bowl hero Julian Edelman's father
is Jewish and his mother is not.
Edelman has been quoted as saying
both "I'm kind of Jewish" and that he is
Jewish.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft is defi-
nitely Jewish.
Wondering if an athlete, coach or team
official is Jewish? Write me at the email
address at the end of the column and I'll
get an answer to your question. ❑
