Kahlo, who also painted in the couple's
suite at the Wardell Apartment Hotel
(now the Park Shelton) at Woodward
and Kirby, was said to have joined her
husband in questioning whether the
facility registered Jewish guests. It has
become legendary that Rivera told man-
agement the couple would leave if Jews
were not generally allowed, motivating
the adoption of an open policy.
"Diego [had family members] forced
to convert to Catholicism, and he was
raised a Catholic," says Rosenthal, refer-
ring to the conversos of Jews in Spain
and Portugal going back centuries.
"He was very aware of his heritage,
and in 1935 ... he says that Jewishness
was a dominant element in his life:'
That year, Rivera told New York's
Jewish Daily Bulletin, "Wherever I have
gone, I have acknowledged myself as a
Jew. Whatever disabilities our people
have suffered, I have experienced with
them. From this has come my sympathy
with the downtrodden masses which
motivates all my work" In 1936, he pro-
vided illustrations for a book of poetry
by Isaac Berliner, a Polish-born Mexican
writing in Yiddish. He also housed Leon
Trotsky (born Lev Bronshtein) in his
home in Mexico when Trotsky was flee-
ing persecution.
Although cultural writers have taken
different stands on whether Kahlo had
Jewish heritage, Rosenthal puts his trust
in historians who support the Jewish
identity, including Salomon Grimberg,
one of the authors of the catalogue rai-
sonne of Kahlo's work "He says there's

devoted a chapter to her Judaism:'
Among a host of related lectures and
tours, Rosenthal will speak on "Diego
and Frida: High Drama in Detroit" on
Sunday, March 15. "My lectures will tell
who they were before they came, what
happened in Detroit, their personal life
in Detroit and their careers after Detroit:'
Rosenthal says.
