world briefs Iran Revolutionary Guard. Iran Has Direct Military Presence On Israel's Borders, Report Says (JNS.org) Iran has a direct military presence along Israel's northern border, according to a new report by the Middle East Media Research Institute. The report, based on research of Arab and Iranian media, says that in recent years, "Iran has based its deployment in Syria on the establishment of a new Hezbollah Syria organization along the lines of Hezbollah Lebanon, as well as on the direct presence of Iranian forces in Syria, particularly on the Golan Heights." According to the report, Iran's deploy- ment in Syria "reveals a trend of Iranian activity in the region that is direct, not only by proxy as it has been to date." Iranian command posts in the Golan Heights oversee "130,000 trained Iranian Basij fighters waiting to enter Syria," which is evident from com- ments by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) senior official Hossein Hamedani last May that were removed immediately after publication in Iran. New IAEA Report: Iran Stalls On Compliance With Nuclear Probe (JNS.org) A new report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations-affiliated nuclear watchdog, found that Iran is continuing to fail to fully cooperate with an investigation into the country's nuclear activity. "Iran has not provided any explana- tions that enable the agency to clarify the outstanding practical measures," the IAEA said. Last year, Iran agreed to provide the IAEA with information on three aspects of its nuclear program: alleged experi- ments with nuclear detonators, work on high-explosive charges used in nuclear blasts, and studies on the calculation of nuclear explosive yields. "Iran insists on hiding this [nuclear program] from the international com- munity at a time when the major pow- ers are continuing to try and allow Iran to produce the core of such weap- ons, enriched uranium. These do not go together," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Iran and world powers have a June 30 deadline to reach a final nuclear deal. White House, State Department Confirm Withholding Information On Iran Talks From Israel (JNS.org) Both the White House and State Department confirmed that the U.S. has been withholding information from Israel concerning the nuclear talks with Iran. "The United States is not going to be in a position of negotiating this agree- ment in public, particularly when we see that there is a continued practice of cherry-picking specific pieces of infor- mation and using them out of context to distort the negotiating position of the United States," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said. An earlier report by Israel's Channel 2 network had said that the U.S. was with- holding information on the Iran talks in order to "punish" Israel. Earnest said, "There's no question that some of the things that the Israelis have said in characterizing our negotiating position have not been accurate." State Department spokeswomen Jen Psaki said the Obama administration is trying to ensure that "classified negoti- ating details stay behind closed doors" and also accused Israel of distortion. "It's safe to say that not everything you're hearing from the Israeli govern- ment is an accurate reflection of the details of the talks," Psaki said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last Thursday that Israel "knows the details of the proposed agreement" on Iran's nuclear program. "I think this is a bad agreement that is dangerous for the State of Israel ... If anyone thinks otherwise, what is there to hide here?"
