THE TONY'AWARD-WINNING BROADWAY MUSICAL

MILLIONFLLANUARTET

INSPIRED BY THE ELECTRIFYING TRUE STORY

grown, she began scripting and nar-
rating educational concerts presented
internationally, including Michigan
— one about her dad and another
about other famous composers.
As Bernstein worked on Crescendo
while continuing her own concert
appearances, she raised some funds
through a Kickstarter campaign.
"Just a year ago, we absolutely
hit the war she says. "A wonderful
family friend, director Mike Nichols,
came to the rescue. He gave us con-
tributions that allowed us to take the
film to the finish line and list him as
executive producer, which opened
important doors for us."
When Bernstein started the film,
there were three or four Sistema-
inspired programs in the U.S. That
number has grown to 116. There also
have been initiatives in Israel.
"So much of what I do brings
me in contact with Jewish groups
because they're so interested in cul-
ture," says Bernstein, whose favorite
religious celebrations are huge seders
with family and friends.
Even with all the filmmaking hur-
dles, Bernstein would try again: "We
would leap at the opportunity to do a
follow-up about the kids in our film
and where they are five or 10 years
from now."
Music is at the heart of another
festival presentation, Alive Inside. It
chronicles the experiences of indi-

viduals who have been revitalized by
listening to music.
The documentary, to be shown
after Crescendo, follows social worker
Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit
organization Music & Memory. He
demonstrates the capacity of music
to combat memory loss.
Also appearing at the festival, Belle
and Sebastian, set during World
War II in occupied France, tells the
story of a boy and the sheepdog he
befriends while dreaming of the day
his mother will return for him from
America.
With Nazis rooting out resistance
fighters helping Jews cross the bor-
der, the loyalty of Belle and Sebastian
— to each other and the village that
has embraced them — is put to the
test.
The family film will be shown
at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the
Holocaust Memorial Center.
Other festival films include The
Long Night, a documentary about
the American sex trade; Ernest &
Celestine, an animated children's
fable about mice and bears; Fed Up, a
documentary about junk food's part
in America's war against obesity, and
executive produced by Katie Couric
and Laurie David (Larry David's ex-
wife); and 1,000 Times Good Night,
a drama about a war photojournal-
ist trying to balance profession and
family. ❑
