SUNHI

C balk up another Jewish slow-

pitch softball tournament
championship for the Motor
City Hit Men.
This one was in sunny Florida.
The Hit Men won the third annual
Menorah Jewish Softball Winter
Jamboree over Presidents Day week-
end at Tradewinds Park in Coconut
Creek, near Fort Lauderdale.
Five months earlier, over Labor
Day weekend, the Hit Men won the
International Jewish Men's Slow-Pitch
Tournament in Mount Prospect, Ill.
It was a whirlwind trip to Florida
for the Hit Men, who flew there Feb.
14, played four games Feb. 15 and
four games Feb. 16 and flew home
Feb. 17.
"Every muscle in my body is sore
from all the running:' Hit Men player-
manager Rick Sherline said a day after
the team's return. "There were only
11 of us, so we all got a lot of playing
time.
"But softball in February in Florida
is wonderful. It was sunny and in the
70s every day. The tournament had
nice diamonds and nice weather:'
The Hit Men beat a familiar foe in
the championship game. They defeat-
ed Chicago Waste Management 20-8.
The Detroiters beat Chicago in the
title game of the Labor Day weekend
tournament.
Five teams were in the field in
Florida. The Hit Men and Chicago
were joined by squads from Boca
Raton, Davie and Palm Beach, all in
Florida.
The Hit Men went 5-1 in the round-
robin portion of the tournament —
including another win over Chicago
— to earn a berth in the four-team
playoffs.
They began the playoffs by aveng-

Softball lift Thek Sun

ing their lone round-robin loss. They
beat Palm Beach 13-11 in the semi-
finals in dramatic fashion on Rodger
Davenport's three-run walk-off homer
in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With their team down 11-10,
Sherline and Danny Weiss got things
going in the seventh with a single and
double to put runners on second and
third with no outs. Davenport fol-
lowed with his blast.
Palm Beach beat the Hit Men by
the same 13-11 score in round-robin
play. Five runs in the seventh lifted
Palm Beach to the win. The Hit Men
returned the favor — and then some
— in the rematch.
Besides a championship trophy, the
Hit Men won a free team entry for
next year's tournament. This year's
team entry fee was $500. Players also
were responsible for transportation
and lodging.
The other players on the Hit Men
roster in Florida were Tony Beugen,
Brad Hantler, Greg Lewis, Randy Otis,
Lyle Schaefer, Andy Schwartz, Marc
Tushman and Russ Young.
Everyone plays in the Metro Detroit
B'nai B'rith Softball League except
Beugen, who lives in Hollywood, Fla.
B'nai B'rith Pisgah/Zeiger Sports
& Entertainment Lodge is a Hit Men
team co-sponsor.
The Florida tournament was a
fundraiser for the Friends of the IDF
Greater Miami Chapter Lone Soldier
Program.
The losing team in each game had
to donate the run differential times
10, and about $900 was raised.
Mercy rules were in place so scores
wouldn't get out of hand, "but the
games were pretty close:' Sherline
said. "I think our 12-run win in the
championship game was about the
maximum:'
