Relishing a couple of weeks of quiet with husband, Todd, while her daughters, Lilley and Marlee, were away at camp, Kroll found herself drawn again to fibers, this time add- ing beading to the mix. She made a few necklaces for herself, which were constantly admired, then sold a few to a local boutique. Every time they reordered, her collection sold out. Suddenly, Kroll was in business. Naming her jewelry baby Mii Myx (pronounced "My Mix"), Kroll was designing and selling on her new Etsy shop, launched in April 2014, while enrolling in an ongoing metal-smithing class, which allowed her to make and use her own metal components in her jewelry. Since she was a kid, Kroll loved art class."Even as an adult, I still love to explore art-supply stores," she says. "I can't walk down the aisles without buying and trying anything new that I can get my hands on." A Always having half a dozen proj- ects in the works in her Birmingham home studio, which her kids con- sider their own personal art-project playground, Kroll finds inspiration everywhere and keeps a sketchbook with her to jot down ideas "floating in her head." The result: intricate designs, from sculptural Buddah pendants to discs of vintage china, created from beads and found objects, natural stones, metals, wood, pearls and more, that are modern, delicate and colorfully vibrant. "I am constantly building a mental scrapbook of shapes, colors and textures that grab me," Kroll says. "I don't want to create jewelry similar to what I already see people wear- ing, even if it's their style. I'd rather show them something new that will excite them. Something they never even imagined. That's what makes me love what I do."
