K

ing Achashverosh in a beret?
Queen Esther in the latest
French couture? Celebrate
"Purim in Paris" this year at The Shul
in West Bloomfield, where the holiday
takes on a French twist in honor of our
Jewish brethren in France.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 5, (Purim) with
"Fashions of the Purim Palace a
Paris-style fashion show where the
classic Purim characters model the
latest French designs in a comical ren-
dition of the events that took place in
Persia more than 2,000 years ago.
The show will be followed by a read-
ing of the megillah and a sumptuous
dinner highlighted by classic French
dishes, such as quiche aux champi-
gnons (mushroom quiche), crusty
baguettes and gateaux de mille-feuilles
(Napoleons). A special dinner and
entertaining program will be provided
for the children.
According to Itty Shemtov, program
and education director of The Shul,
this year's French-themed Purim cele-
bration is a fun way to show solidarity
with all French Jews and to honor the
memory of those killed in the recent
terrorist attack on the HyperCacher
kosher market in Paris.
"Purim celebrates the salvation of
our people from the hands of the wick-

ed Haman and empowers us to con-
front the Hamans of our day:' Shemtov
said. "We announce with pride: `Je suis
Juif (I am a Jew).."'
Guests are invited to join in the
spirit of the celebration by wearing
French-themed costumes, a new twist
on the traditional custom of dressing
like the Persian characters from the
story of Purim.
The entertaining fashion show
blends the traditional Purim story,
where Queen Esther and her cousin
Mordechai save the Jewish people
from destruction by one of King
Achashverosh's henchmen, Haman,
with some modern and very funny
embellishments. While Haman's plans
are discovered via Gawker.com, specu-
lation abounds as to whether Esther
will be selling some of her designer
fashions on eBay.
There will also be a megillah read-
ing and masquerade, followed by a
soup and hamantashen bar, at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, March 4.
The program is sponsored by Eric
Abramson in memory of his late par-
ents, Violet and Irving Abramson, and
by an anonymous donor.
Cost for the March 5 "Purim in
Paris" program is $18 per adult and
$5 per child before March 1; the cost
increases by $5 per person after
March 1.
Reservations may be made at www.
theshul.net/reservations or call (248)
788-4000.
