eff Ellis continues to win
championships and deal with
adversity.
The 55-year-old West Bloomfield
resident and cancer survivor won
another Michigan Senior Olympics
Winter Games weightlifting title Feb. 9
with a bench press of 300 pounds.
It was his ninth Senior Olympics
gold medal in weightlifting, but the
bench press was 20 pounds lighter than
his record-breaking 320-pound effort
in January 2014 in the 55-59 age group.
That bench press also was his own
middle-age personal-best, beating
the 315 pounds he did in 2013 in the
Senior Olympics Summer Games.
Ellis won his first Senior Olympics
gold medal in summer 2009 with a
bench press of 275 pounds. A few
months later, he was diagnosed with
colon cancer and underwent surgery.
So what caused his Winter Games
drop-off from 2014 to 2015? Injuries,
which happen now and then to com-
petitive weightlifters.
Ellis won a Senior Olympics Summer
Games gold medal in August 2014 with
a 305-pound bench press.
That came after he had to stop train-
ing twice for a total of a month because
of triceps tendonitis in his right arm.
He blamed the nagging injury on over-
training and trying to return to train-
ing too soon.
Ellis resumed full-time training from
June to August, but it was too late to
return to form.
"I like to think dropping from 320
to 305 was caused by the injury alone,
not the fact that I'm older:' he said with
a laugh.
Ellis feels he could have done bet-
ter earlier this month, say 305 or 310
pounds, but he elected to try for 315
pounds and he couldn't do it.
His most recent gold medal was pre-
ceded by a one-month layoff caused by
a tendon injury in his left shoulder.
"This is something that's bothered
me on and off for a few years:' he said.
"I got a cortisone shot in my shoulder,
and now it feels the best it's felt in 20
years. It feels 100 percent normal.
"Physically, this is the best I've ever
felt. I hope it continues for many more
years:'
Ellis isn't used to taking time off
from training. He said he's been
weightlifting since he was 17 and his
longest time away from the gym was
four months following cancer surgery.

Other than that, the longest he's been
sidelined has been a month.
Unfortunately, Ellis said, injuries are
part of a vigorous weightlifting work-
out regimen.
"Your body isn't designed for heavy
lifting:' he said. "I guess I'm fortunate I
haven't had injury problems until now:'
Weightlifting — which Ellis calls a
way of life and an obsession for him —
serves another important purpose in
his life besides keeping him in shape,
especially at this time of the year.
He's a certified public accountant,
and this is income tax season.
"I make sure I always get in my
workouts:' he said. "I can't think of a
better way to de-stress than going to
the gym.
"Whether I'm doing weights, the
elliptical machine or StairMaster, I put
on my headphones, listen to my iPod
and clear my mind. I don't think about
work:'
You don't have to be a CPA in the
throes of income tax season to take
advantage of a workout, Ellis said.
"I'd recommend it for anyone going
through a stressful period:' he said.
So who does Ellis listen to on his
headphones?
"Motown, Bob Seger, Bruce
Springsteen, '60s and '70s stuff' he said.
Ellis has now won 10 state cham-
pionships in weightlifting. Nine have
been in the Senior Olympics and the
other came in 1981 when he won the
Michigan Intercollegiate Powerlifting
Championship while he was a student
at Michigan State University.
He plans to compete again in the
Senior Olympics in August and also
participate in events in the Flint area
this summer.
