Sen. Peters Praised
For Iran Anti-Nuke Bill
I am so proud and grateful that at least one
of our senators, Gary Peters, cosponsored the
Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015. Iran
has repeatedly threatened the U.S., Israel and
the Jewish people as a whole.
What is especially concerning, though, is
that the American Jewish establishment and
leaders, who purport to represent the Jewish
community and support for the Jewish state,
remain embarrassingly silent. Their silence
is reminiscent of 1942 when Peter Bergson
tried to awaken the Jewish establishment
to the plight of Jews in Germany (and the
conquered countries) and pushed to rescue
as many Jews as possible. The Jewish estab-
lishment opposed Bergson's efforts and was
silent in the face of the Holocaust until it was
too late.
Again the American Jewish establishment
has remained silent as Iran races toward
obtaining nuclear weapons for the stated
goal of wiping out Israel and all Jews.
When will the Jewish establishment and
leaders wake up and address the threat to the
U.S. and world Jewry of a nuclear Iran?

These articles and others this past fall
provided long-awaited lessons about the
forgotten Jews of Arab lands who, with their
descendants, comprise half of Israel's popula-
tion. Your articles undoubtedly heightened
community interest.
On Feb. 8, about 90 curious people came
to learn about the plight of Sylvie Jami Salei's
Tunisian family and to taste traditional cui-
sine.
Keter Torah's Rabbi Sasson Natan is to
be commended for developing the www
jRefugees1948.org project's website, intended
to help correct a 67-year-old human rights
injustice, and for initiating community pro-
grams to reveal Mizrahi/Sephardic heritage.
StandWithUs-MI, with collaborating orga-
nizations and project committee volunteers,
will welcome the community to Keter Torah
Synagogue on April 19, when the "Different
Cultures, Different Foods" series will cel-
ebrate the end of Passover with a Moroccan
Mimouna festival and a Moroccan family's
story and, on June 14, feature Ye:menite heri-
tage with Gabriel Attar.

Jewish Refugees Of Arab
Lands No Longer Forgotten

On behalf of the JRefugees1948 project, I
want to express deep appreciation for the
historical content of the Detroit Jewish News
editorial "Jewish Refugees Deserve World
Recognition" (Jan. 15 page 29-30), preceded
by excellent coverage of the history-making
first annual commemoration ceremony at
Keter Torah Synagogue ("Jews From Arab
Lands; Jan. 1, page 16).

roucho Marx was a major Jewish
movie and television star. Born
in New York on Oct. 2, 1895, he
made his debut onto the stage just before
his 11th birthday.
His career spanned film, television,
Broadway and radio. Grouch, as his
friends called him, was known for his
unsurpassed, quick, biting wit and was
recognized as one of the greatest comedi-
ans in the world.
Groucho's parents were immigrants.
Groucho initially considered a career in
medicine, but owing to the influence of
his mother, Minna, who was drawn to the
theater, he pursued comedy instead.
Despite his success, Groucho never
forgot his roots and used his sharp wit to
combat the lunacy of bigotry. When his
daughter was forbidden from swimming
at a club that excluded Jews, Marx wrote
the club president a highly publicized
letter in which he said: "Since my little

When Groucho passed away in 1977,
the Detroit Jewish News, as well as every
major publication in America, noted this
event. ❑
