Mitzvah Makers
Young girls fundraise to help
Yad Ezra feed the hungry.
Maya Kellman, 3, Sloane Berman, 7,
Zoe Kellman, 6, and Morgan Berman,
6, fundraise at Hersh's.

organ Berman, 6, of
Commerce receives many
presents toward the end
of the year. She has a late November
birthday. Then there is her fam-
ily's Chanukah celebration as well
as Christmas, which is celebrated by
extended members of her father's fam-
ily.
So, when Morgan's birthday came
around last year, she decided she had
enough toys and games and, instead of
keeping them, gave them away to Toys
for Tots, a national nonprofit started
by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Morgan's mother, Stacie Berman,
continued to encourage her daughter's
compassion by teaching her to be
aware that many in the community
lacked not only fun toys to play with,
but also enough good food to eat.
The Bermans attend Shabbat ser-
vices regularly at Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield, where they make sure
to take cans of food to donate to Yad
Ezra. It was not long before Morgan
and her older sister Sloane, 7, started
asking where the food they put in the
large bins wound up and how it got to
the people who needed it.
Shortly after, Morgan, Sloane and
their friends, Zoe Kellman, 3, and
her sister Maya Kellman, 6, also of
Commerce, set out to raise money for
Yad Ezra.
The four girls weaved Rainbow
Loom bracelets and decorated pens
M
and pencils with duct tape. On
Saturday, Dec. 13, the girls staged
a sale at Hersh's Women's Apparel
on Orchard Lake Road and sold the
bracelets and pens — along with
cookies from their mom's business,
Slo-Mo Cakes and Cookies — and
raised $360 for Yad Ezra.
The next week, they donated
their money, along with a few hours
of volunteering, to the agency's
Southfield offices by distributing
refreshments to clients. In addition
to the money, the girls also collected
cans of food donated by Hersh's
patrons at the fundraiser.
"Within three hours, the girls
raised $360, and we also had a mini-
van of food ready to deliver to Yad
Ezra: Berman said.
"I liked helping people who don't
have food:' said Zoe, after working for
about an hour at Yad Ezra. "It made
me feel good inside my heart:'
The four girls were accompanied by
their parents, Traci and Kevin Kellman
and Stacie and Ryan Berman. The
families say they hope to make this an
annual tradition.
"I hope they will carry on this feel-
ing of compassion as they get older;
Stacie Berman said.
Yad Ezra has opportunities for
volunteers of all ages. The agency
requests that parents accompany
youngsters under age 16. To volunteer,
