A

fter finishing yet another
phenomenal summer at
Camp Ramah in Ontario,
Canada, last year, I found myself in a
post-camp depression. I was just about
to begin my freshman year, and I had
all the nerves that any incoming fresh-
man student experiences. I wasn't sure
how I would make it through the year
without my best friends whom I lived,
laughed and cried with for the past
two months.
To my pleasant surprise, I was
ecstatic to find there would be three
full-time Ramah fellows working in
my school for the year.
They bring a piece of Ramah (the
Conservative camping movement)
year-round by raising the excitement
and engagement related to Jewish
experiences and activities. Over the
year, I developed personal connections
with each one. You can always find
them staffing USY conventions, roam-
ing the halls and bringing cheer to
shake up the everyday stresses of high
school life.
After finishing my freshman year, I
was anticipating another memorable
summer at Ramah. I was thrilled
to find out that one of the fellows,
Darrien Sherman, would be my Rosh
Edah, supervisor for my age group.
This meant I had the opportunity to
spend the summer with her and build
on the connection we'd made in the
previous year.

As the summer drew to a close and
the post-camp depression was again
sinking in, I realized I would have the
chance to spend another year with two
new Ramah fellows, Sam Mellits and
Nadav Davidson, along with returning
fellow Darrien.
Sam Mellits was born and raised
in Philadelphia and wears his Ramah
Poconos pride on his sleeve. It's hard
not to crack a smile around Sam and,
for someone who's as humorous as he,
he sure knows his biology.
It's hard to believe that Nadav was a
commander in the Israeli army given
his sweet and caring nature. Working
as a tennis instructor at Ramah Nyack
(New York) this past summer, Nadav is
not afraid to accept a challenge on the
tennis court.
The fellows not only have had a
profound influence on me, but their
impact extends to students, campers
and parents. They are role models,
mentors and, most importantly,
friends. They've taught me to take
pride in Ramah, develop new leader-
ship skills and find ways to bring "a
piece of home" into my everyday life.
Although the two-year Ramah fel-
lowship will end this June, the Ramah
legacy they have instilled in me will
live on forever.
