"My father, who's 94, and his brother, who's 90, have been working together since they were teenagers," said Rob Orley, who has been in business with his brother some 30 years. Matthew and Alex grew up in Detroit's tight-knit Jewish community and also spent time living in Norway when their grandfather, the late David Hermelin, was appointed ambassador to to that country. This time and place played a role in honing their style and taste, Rob Orley says. He points out that Matthew and Alex are to some extent a composition of their four grandparents: "two very, very pow- erful grandfathers — David Hermelin and Joe Orley — and two stylish grand- mothers — Doreen and Suzanne — who were very involved:' They got to know their market early on. Alex worked at a clothing store called Peasant in downtown Birmingham dur- ing high school, and Matthew worked at Roots. They found their way to New York City, with Alex heading to New York University in 2006 after high school. Matthew and Samantha moved to the city in 2007 after a stint abroad in Paris during his junior and her senior year in college. "They always liked fashion, they had their own style always, and were never influenced by the crowd:' Rob Orley says. And they came to fashion to a large extent through art, says Marcie Orley. "It's really a marriage of art and fashion in their brand:' she explains. Matthew and Alex attended high school at Cranbrook Kingswood, a cam- pus that is home to an art museum, a historic Arts-and-Crafts-style house and 40-acre garden, among other features. "To be in a place that was so aestheti- cally inspiring, every day, they truly ap- preciated and internalized the beauty that was around them," Marcie Orley says. They also come from a family that col- lects art and spent time at art museums. Meanwhile, Samantha's family also has strong roots in both art and fashion. Her mother and uncle are artists, and her great-grandparents had a luxury retail store in Toronto called Creeds. "My grandfather, who is now 93, was the first to bring designer brands into Canada:' she says. "And so I've always grown up with a deep appreciation of fashion and style and that world:' The elder Orleys are enthusiastic about the trio's work and also their passion for their brand, which is selling around the world. "This is their vision:' Rob Orley says. "They're great kids, working really, really hard to build a great brand:' ❑ Orley is not now available in Metro Detroit stores. Go to www.orley.us to see more.
