lezundheit, a klezmer band
chock full of local talent,
will perform at Cafe Shalom,
Congregation Beth Shalom's annual
cabaret, at the Oak Park synagogue at 8
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.
Trumpeter Ken Posner of West
Bloomfield organized the band in 2014
to play traditional and modern klezmer,
gypsy, Balkan and jazz music. He asked
his son, Alan, director of bands at
Berkley High School and conductor of
Kids Klez of Michigan, to serve as the
music director while he handles the
administrative duties.
"I think it's great we are coming
together as friends, family and musicians
to help keep the klezmer tradition alive
and to add some 'chutzpah' to the Detroit
Jewish community:' Alan says.
As a music student at the University
of Michigan, Alan Posner, who now lives
in Ferndale, studied theory, composi-
tion, arranging, conducting and more
in addition to his main instrument,
saxophone. Through his daily work with
middle school and high school music
students, he knows how to build a strong
ensemble.
Ken Posner, a lawyer with Couzens
Lansky in Farmington Hills, says the
band gives him an opportunity he never
thought he would have.
"I played the trumpet all through high
school and college, but I hadn't touched
it for almost 35 years:' he said. As I
watched and encouraged Alan to grow as
a musician and educator, I dreamed that
someday we might get a chance to play
in a band together. This is really a dream
come true:'
The other band members are people
Alan knew. There is a strong sense of fam-
ily in the group. Alan's fiancee, Michelle
Rubinlicht of Ferndale, is the flutist; and
the accordionist, Justin Wedes of Detroit,
is his first cousin.
Gail Posner, Alan's mom and Ken's wife,
is the dance leader. Clarinetist Elizabeth
Ken Posner and Alan Posner
Winokur of Berkley was a senior drum
major with Alan in the 2003 Andover
High School Marching Band. Elizabeth's
fiance, Aaron Lebovic of Berkley, is
the drummer — and he will serve as
one of Alan's groomsmen when he and
Rubinlicht marry in June.
David Rodgers of Oak Park, a private
music instructor, pianist for Klezundheit
and a member of Beth Shalom, plays in
a fantasy football league with Alan. He
describes the band's sound as "toe-tap-
ping, old-school swing jazz, mixed with a
Jewish flair:'
Violinist Dan Horwitz of Huntington
Woods played in West Bloomfield High
School's orchestra with Michelle and is
Alan and Michelle's rabbi at Congregation
Shir Tikvah in Troy, where the band per-
formed for Simchat Torah in October.
"Our monthly rehearsals are a perfect
opportunity to jam out and appreciate
the sound of a collective. There's noth-
ing quite like making music as part of a
group:' Horwitz said.
Ken Posner brought bassist, harmoni-
cist and otolaryngologist Glen Gardner
of Bloomfield Township to the group.
Gardner and Posner got acquainted while
working with the late Cantor Steve Dubov
at Temple Beth El.
Other Klezundheit members include
Jacob Levy of Beverly Hills on sax and
Howard Collens of Huntington Woods on
trombone. Collens joined the group after
hearing them play at Shir Tikvah.
Refreshments will be served. Advance
tickets are available for $10 by calling the
Beth Shalom office at (248) 547-7970
by noon on Friday, Jan. 30. Tickets are
available at the door for $15.
