y name is Amy Gross and

I'm a "Detroiter in Israel."
I made aliyah several years
ago. I live with my husband, Avishay
Nachon, and our 14-month-old son, Ori,
in Giva'atyim, a small city near Tel Aviv.
We hosted the third annual Detroiters in
Israel Thanksgiving celebration in our
home.
I helped launch this initiative. I saw
groups of Detroiters getting together in
various cities around the U.S and said
we have to do the same here in Israel.
With the full support of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and
led by Yoav Raban, Federation's out-
reach and engagement coordinator in
Israel, we were able to create this social
network for Detroiters living in Israel.
We organize holidays, social events
and programs, provide them with a local
resource, a support system if needed and
act as a connection between them and
Israelis from Detroit's Partnership2Gether
region, the Central Galilee.

Our Thanksgiving dinner is our big-
gest and most successful event.
Thanksgiving is the one holiday
where people from all different back-
grounds pack up and head home to be
with loved ones for the long weekend
full of food, football, shopping and qual-
ity family time.
When you can't go home (because
you're 5,000 miles away), it's easy to feel
homesick this time of year.
This event is so special because it pro-
vides our community in Israel with the
feeling of an extended Detroit family by
bringing everyone together under one
roof for a special evening of food and
football — the way we do it in Detroit.
We packed my apartment full of
Metro Detroiters and Israelis from our
partnership region for a traditional
Thanksgiving feast.
I was blown away to see so many
young adults from our area living in
Israel for various reasons.
On Dec. 18, our group headed to
Haifa to celebrate Chanukah together in
the home of another Detroiter in Israel,
Matthew Kaminsky.
