Martius in Downtown Detroit last
Tuesday evening, the first night of
Chanukah.
Along with enjoying hot soups
from Chef Cari Kosher Catering,
fruit and goodies from Whole Foods
and Bake Station and marshmallows
ready for roasting over open fires, the
Menorah in the D crowd also enjoyed
music from Soul Farm, an Israeli
band.
When it was time for candle-light-
ing, Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov of The
Shul in West Bloomfield, Jay Hack
of Federation's NEXTGen Detroit,
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and

philanthropist Alan Zekelman were
raised high on a mechanical lift. The
sound of the entire crowd singing the
Chanukah blessings and traditional
songs echoed symbolically off the
surrounding Downtown buildings.
Chabad representatives gave out
menorahs and a festive "human"
dreidel posed for photos. The weather
cooperated to provide a wonderful
start to the holiday.
Menorah in the D is hosted annu-
ally by The Shul of West Bloomfield,
Chabad in the D and in partner-
ship with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's NextGEN
Detroit division, with generous sup-
port from Quicken Loans and other
sponsors.
