Adat Shalom Synagogue's religious school
fifth-graders adopted a family through Jewish
Family Service this Chanukah. As a class,
they went shopping for gifts on the fam-
ily's Chanukah wish list at Target. They then
wrapped the gifts and delivered them to IFS.
Last year, the class did the same mitzvah as
fourth-graders.
Through this activity, "the kids learn a great
deal about tzedakah and taking care of others
in our community:' said Rabbi Rachel Shere.

Goodman, attorney and partner of
Goodman Acker P.C. in Southfield,
decided to dress up as a clown in this
year's America's Thanksgiving Parade.
What surprised Goodman the most were
"the faces of the children when they
saw the wild and crazy Clown Corps
— draped with several strands of the
300,000 beads we were passing out to
the crowds:'

Mn in Service In The _War
JN
ews have fought in every
branch of the American
military in every war. For
example, although a tiny portion of the
population in the colonies, about 100
Jews fought in the Revolution, a war
that established the United States of
America.
The highest honor any man or woman
serving in the military can receive today
is the Congressional Medal of Honor.
At the least, 27 American Jews have
received this medal since it was created.
The first Jewish recipients were Henry
Heller and David Orbansky for their
bravery in the Civil War. The last was
Tibor Rubin in 2005, which was award-
ed to him 55 years after his actions in
the Korean War in 1950.
But, what about the thousands of Jews
who also served honorably and bravely
in America's wars with distinction, if not
medal winners? While many did indeed
win medals and some did not, they all
served our nation with honor and dedi-
