December 18 • 2014

t would be a shame to let 2014 end

without publicizing another success-
ful year of slowpitch softball for the
Motor City Hit Men.
That's the tournament team name for
a core group of 11 guys who also annu-
ally dominate league play.
Check out their resume for this year:
• They won the International Jewish
Men's Slo-Pitch Tournament over Labor
Day weekend in Mount Prospect, a sub-
urb of Chicago, dominating the 14-team
field from the U.S. and Canada with a
perfect 9-0 record.
• They played in four leagues and won
seven of eight possible championships.
• Besides winning regular-season and
playoff titles in the Sunday morning
B'nai B'rith league at Drake Sports Park
in West Bloomfield, they won five of six
regular-season and playoff champion-
ships in Tuesday night spring, summer
and fall leagues sponsored by the Novi
Parks and Recreation Department.
• Their combined record for 2014 was
72-4-1.
The B'nai B'rith team is called Pisgah/
Zeiger and the Novi team is sponsored
by Diversified Benefits in the spring and
summer and Orleans International in
the fall.
Here's the core group: Lyle Schaefer,
Todd Kaluzny, Marc Tushman, Ian Freed,
David Ettlinger, Rodger Davenport,
Andy Schwartz, Danny Weiss, Brad
Hantler, John Shea and Rick Sherline.
The tournament and Novi team
also includes Harold Grossbart, Max
Weberman and pitcher Greg Lewis.
Schwartz was almost perfect at
the plate during the International
Tournament. He made only three outs in
nine games.
What's most interesting about the
group is its diversity. While everyone
lives in Oakland County, the players'
ages range from the 20s to the 60s.
"We have players in every decade ...
20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s," said Sherline,
the group's player-manager.
So what's the secret to the group's con-

tinuing success?
"No. 1, you have to have good players,
and we have good players:' Sherline said.
"We have guys who played college base-
ball, who had formal, high-level training
in the sport, and we have veteran slow-
pitch softball players, guys who really
know how to play slowpitch softball.
"What helps us the most is we don't
make mental mistakes. We don't hurt
ourselves. That's our hallmark.
"Everyone makes (physical) errors.
That happens. But we play the game the
right way. The guys know the nuances:'
Another important factor is how well
everyone gets along.
"Camaraderie is very important:'
Sherline said. "We're all good buddies:'

On The Tour

Laetita Beck made history this month
when she earned a 2015 LPGA Tour card.
She became the first Israeli golfer to
be a full-fledged member of the LPGA
or PGA Tour.
Beck, who has family in the Detroit
area, shot 4 under par for five rounds at
the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament
at the LPGA International Hills Course
in Daytona Beach, Fla., but that wasn't
good enough.
She was one of seven golfers who
competed in a three-hole aggregate
playoff. Five golfers, including Beck,
remained tied after the playoff, so they
went into a sudden-death playoff for
three LPGA Tour spots.
A birdie by Beck earned her coveted
card.
Beck was a star golfer for Duke
University before graduating earlier this
year. She turned professional after quali-
fying for the British Open in July.
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Beck
moved with her family to Israel with she
was 6. She moved to the United States
when she was 14 to attend the IMG
Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
The 2015 LPGA Tour has 33 tourna-
ments in 15 countries. Total purse is
$61.6 million. ❑
