An Etrog ... With A Kick!

W

ho says you have to wait until
next Sukkot to enjoy the flavor
of that holiday? Enter Sukkah
Hill Spirits etrog and herbal liqueurs from
Howard and Marni Witkin in Los Angeles.
The Witkins never meant to go into the
liqueur business. He has had a career
in software development, now runs
a life insurance company and was
the lead organizer of LA's massive
eruv. But, after Marni experimented
making a liqueur with a handful of
etrogim after Sukkot, the couple
realized there was a market for
the sweet, clear, fruity, floral and
powerful liqueur (38 percent alco-
hol). When a local market owner
told them he would buy and sell
every bottle they could make, the
Witkins decided to start Sukkah
Hill Spirits last year.
They have a warehouse
where they make and store
their spirits, including a spice-
driven Besamim liqueur. Both

products are certified kosher and kosher for
Passover by Star K. They also are considered
artisanal because they are made in small
batches, one barrel at a time, using ingredi-
ents grown by local farmers.
Both liqueurs won gold medals in the
2013 Spirits International Prestige competi-
tion for best fruit-based and best herbal/
botanical liqueurs.
Etrog liqueur has a fresh, smooth, not-
too-sweet flavor that is very aromatic.
Besamim liqueur tastes of cinnamon, nut-
meg and clove, with a balanced spice flavor.
Both are perfect on the rocks or as the base
of a cocktail.
Sukkah Hill Spirits are expected to be
available locally for Chanukah at these
locations: Vintage Village Fine Wine in
Lathrup Village, Prince Fine Wine and
Liquor in Southfield and Lincoln Drugs in
Oak Park. Bottles can be ordered directly
by visiting www.sukkahhill.com. Also find
cocktail recipes there. Suggested retail
price for a 375-ml bottle is $24.95.
