help students find their own voices on
campus.

Hillel Of Metro Detroit
Miriam Starkman, Hillel of Metro
Detroit (HMD) executive director, says
this fall the six schools HMD serves have
not seen a rise of anti-Israel activity.
"In fact, at two of our schools,
our students are working with the
Muslim Student Association (Wayne
State) and the Arab Student Union
(UM-Dearborn) to plan multi-cultural,
nonpolitical events:' she said.
"We hope these events will help sus-
tain and enhance the sense of civility
on these campuses.
"We have worked hard to cultivate
strong relationships with the admin-
istrations and other student groups at
our assorted schools:'
Under most of these Hillel umbrel-
las are various pro-Israel groups,
including American Movement for
Israel and I-LEAD (Israel Leadership,
Engagement, Advocacy and Dialogue)
at U-M; MZ-Grinspoon Israel
Advocacy at HMD; and Spartans for
Israel at MSU, among others.
On the pro-Palestinian rights side,
groups like Students for Justice in
Palestine (SJP) exist at U-M, Eastern
Michigan, MSU, Wayne State and U-M
Dearborn. So far, Jewish Voice for
Peace (JVP) only has a group at U-M.
"It's still quiet:' HMD's Starkman
said. "There was one relatively small
SJP program at WSU and one at UM-D.
There's no telling what is to come:'
U-M's Shames said, "With the rise
of JVP on campus, we are facing a new
challenge, as we saw at the Presbyterian
Church General Assembly this past
summer, of managing a divestment
movement from different communi-
ties, including our own.
"It can be particularly painful for
many Jewish students in our Hillel
community to hear other Jewish stu-
dents advocate against Israel on cam-
pus. And it can be hard for the more
left-leaning students to understand
why Hillel cannot support the activism
of all Jewish students on campus.
"In this case, while we will always
strive to enrich the lives of all Jewish
students on campus and welcome
every student to participate in our
community, we cannot be expected to
abandon our mission and support anti-
Israel activism.
"Our Hillel remains committed
to supporting Israel as a Jewish and
democratic state, and encouraging
our students to experience Israel and
explore the role Israel plays in their
Jewish lives:'
