very year at the Jewish News, the entire staff looks forward to "judgment
day," the day we display all of the artwork submitted by children for our
annual cover art contest and try to choose
the one we want to see on our cover.
Every year the task seems to get harder — there
are so many talented children out there! This year,
we chose artwork that we had never seen before: a
Chanukah octopus.
The beautiful design on our cover was the brain-
child of 11-year-old Jack Novick, a sixth-grader at
Bloomfield Hills Middle School, and son of Hannah
and Barry Novick, and brother to Lauren and
Spencer. The family attends Adat Shalom Synagogue
in Farmington Hills.

has eight arms ..."
Entering the JIV's annual art contest is
a family tradition at the Novick home,
said Jack's mom, Hannah. "His older siblings did it, too:' she said. "His sister won
an honorable mention, but now Jack has her beat."
Jack will receive $100. He said he doesn't know what he'll do with it yet. "Maybe
I'll save it:' he said.
All of our other winners, listed below, will receive $18.
All of the Chanukah art contest entries — all 139 — will be on display at
Chanukah Wonderland at the Orchard Lake Mall in West Bloomfield Dec. 18-22.
The annual festival, put on my the Bais Chabad Torah Center in West Bloomfield,
will also feature activities such as a dreidel bounce house, a fry-a-latke station
and a grand menorah lighting at 5 p.m. on Dec. 22. Everyone is asked to bring a
can of food to the event to help build the world's largest "canorah" for Yad Ezra in
