T

he home of the future Farber
Soul Center was brimming
with "Art and Soul" at the aptly
named event where close to 500 women
gathered to support Friendship Circle of
Michigan's newest endeavor.
According to Bassie Shemtov, director
of Friendship Circle's Lifetown, slightly
more than $85,000 was raised at the Nov.
12 fundraiser held in the 18,000-square-
foot site at Drake and Walnut Lake roads
in West Bloomfield.
The center is named for William "Bill"
and Audrey Farber of West Bloomfield,
whose $2.1 million matching gift made
it possible. Their son, David, and his
wife, Nancy, are also longtime Friendship
Circle supporters. Nancy was a co-chair
of the event, along with Susan August and
Jill Menuck.
Attendees got a first look at the facil-
ity that will include art studios, a gallery
and a cafe. The center will provide a place
where young adults with special needs
can learn vocational skills, develop their
creativity and share their newfound tal-
ents with the greater community.
"Tonight is the beginning of something
great:' Shemtov told the audience.
Choosing from a "gift registry" of items
that ranged in cost from $25,000 to $100,
attendees "unveiled" their donations via
paintings that had been hung throughout
the building. Some of the items purchased
included a "shopbot buddy" ($15,000), a
kiln ($3,600), Apple laptops ($1,800 each)
and a pottery wheel ($1,800).
The art studio will feature cutting-
edge digital arts such as photography,
animation and 3D printing in addition to
traditional art such as painting, ceramics,

weaving, jewelry and mixed media.
The Soul Cafe will provide training and
employment for adults with special needs
who are interested in culinary arts and
food service. Shemtov foresees it as a place
where people will gather to enjoy good
food in a special environment.
A new element to jumpstart the project:
Those who donate $50 or more will receive
a gift handmade by one of the artists in the
program. These unique creations include
coasters, T-shirts, engraved mugs, custom
jewelry and a personal portrait
"This will help the kids get used to ful-
filling orders' Shemtov said.
She estimates the center will take about
a year to complete. Construction is expect-
ed to begin within the next two months.
Approval was received late last week from
West Bloomfield Township.
