j

illian Berger started work-
ing at Ruby's Balm in West
Bloomfield in 2001, during
her holiday break from her freshman
year at Michigan State University, and
just couldn't kick the beauty-business
habit. Throughout college, through-
out law school at Cooley, throughout
a brief career in finance and even
throughout practicing law, getting
married and having a baby (now 19
months), Berger kept coming back to
the Balm whenever she could.
Finally, last February, she gave in to
beauty full-time. When the opportuni-
ty arose to buy the modern-day apoth-
ecary from founder Sheryl Freedland,
Berger brought in her dad, Marty
Gold, and they jumped on it.
Brimming with all the best of bath,
body and beauty — and staffed with

helpful experts — Ruby's Balm still
offers the best of beauty with the
fantastic customer service that comes
with a family-run business.
"I've been given a great footprint to
pick up where Sheryl left off," Berger
says. "There's a reason the store has
been so successful, so why reinvent the
wheel? The biggest change I've made is
that I added wood floors."
Customers depend on the bou-
tique for stocking hard-to-find top-
shelf brands, and Berger is thrilled
to set free her artistic sensibilities
and thrives on the relationships she
builds with customers. She also has a
knack for recommending the perfect
gift for any recipient (in all price
ranges), so we've turned to her for
a few favorite suggestions for your
Chanukah list.
