New Generation

Dubin Cleaners welcomes son to the
longtime family business.

mall businesses like Dubin Cleaners
& Laundry, a family-run enterprise
in Farmington Hills, continue to
grow in the community.
Sam Dubin recently joined his family's
dry cleaning business as director of market-
ing, making him the fourth generation in
the company. His parents, Sandy and Andy
Dubin, incorporated their business in 1991.
Sam grew up around the family busi-
ness. As a young boy, he'd often go to the
store directly from school. After graduating
Central Michigan University with a degree
in broadcasting and political science, he
interned at WWJ-950 and Fox 2 News before
deciding to join the family business full time.
Sam originally thought he would become
a news reporter, but after graduating in May,
he changed course.
"I realised that what I learned in college
and in my internships with media and mar-
keting I could use to help grow and expand
the dry cleaning business," he said.
Through a Refer-a-Friend Program,
Facebook and Twitter, Sam has increased
online traffic and customer referrals.
"People have told me they enjoy reading
our posted content:' Sam said. "Just because
technology is increasing doesn't mean that
personal service is decreasing. I think they
both can be collaborative"
Sam also plans to learn all facets of the
business, including the chemicals used on

certain materials, pressing and finishing
methods and cleaning procedures for specific
materials. The business handles all kinds of
cleaning services, including wedding gown
cleaning and preservation, designer clothing,
down garments, table linens and more.

Deep Roots
The Dubin family legacy goes back several
generations. Sam Dubin, an immigrant
from Russia, was a tailor by trade.
`After the Army, in 1946, my father, Irvin,
joined my grandfather, Sam, and started
Dubin Cleaners in Rosedale Park in Detroit,"
Andy Dubin said.
Andy joined the business full-time in
1981, while he was attending college. Like his
son, Sam, he also grew up in the business. As
a youngster, Andy would pick up fallen pins
on the floor and later collect 25 cents per
hour from his father.
After Irvin retired in 1980, the business
was then run by Andy and his brother, Ray.
The business in Rosedale Park was sold
in 1991, with Andy and Sandy retaining the
pick-up and delivery part of the business.
In 2006, the Dubins opened their storefront
cleaning business in Farmington Hills. They
moved to the west side of Orchard Lake to
the current location in 2010, doubling their
square footage.
"A lot of people from the surrounding
communities, such as Birmingham, West
Bloomfield, Franklin, Commerce Township
and Bloomfield Hills, come to our store,"
Sam said. "We are different from other dry

cleaners in the sense
that people come to
