he Jewish Family Service Board
of Directors recognized an
incredible contribution from the
community during its fall meeting A
plaque honoring the Zedakah Club was
unveiled by the agency's leadership after
the club's remaining members made a
substantial financial gift to JFS.
Founded by Sophia Jacob in 1932,
the Zedakah Club was a women's group
providing financial assistance, along with
social and emotional support to Jewish
families in need in the Metro Detroit
region. For decades, the club was an
understanding, supportive place to turn
for families facing crisis.
The club's two remaining members —
Deena Fishman and Betty Steinlauf —
recently decided that continuing with the
club's work would no longer be feasible.
They elected to donate the $25,000
remaining in the club's coffers to JFS,
while also referring the families they
helped for ongoing assistance.
"No task was too big and no place was
too far to give whatever help was need-
ed:' said Fishman. "We're pleased that
the organization and the women behind
it will not be forgotten:'
Fishman was present at the JFS board
meeting on Oct 29, along with Joel and
Autumn Jacob — Sophia Jacob's grand-
son and great-granddaughter.
"My grandmother Sophia Jacob
founded the Zedakah Club with the goal
of meeting many of the unmet basic
needs of Jewish families in Detroit:' Joel
Jacob said. "Her work was for sure an
inspiration to me and my children's dedi-
cation in our work to end hunger in our
lifetime:'
Bertha Cohen with the painting
she donated to JFS
Artist Honored
The artist Bertha Cohen was also hon-
ored by the JFS Board of Directors at the
meeting, as the agency formally unveiled
a stunning abstract painting that she
painted and donated to the agency. The
painting is displayed at the JFS office in
West Bloomfield.
The work, a wall-sized canvas covered
in broad swirls of black and white and
punctuated with arresting splashes of
color, is the artist's response to the con-
flict and suffering present in the world
today.
In her comments to the JFS board,
Cohen described the optimism for a bet-
ter world embedded in accents of vibrant
blue paint, which stand out like glimpses
of the sky amidst the chaos of the paint-
ing's darker elements.
"The painting is called Hope for Peace,
which is something that we all want:'
Cohen said. "I'm honored to have it on
display here for the whole Jewish com-
munity to see:'
Cohen was born in Rio De Janeiro,
Brazil, and she moved to the United
States in 1959 with her husband,
Alberto.
She enrolled in art classes at the
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and
Wayne State University shortly
after moving to the Detroit
area, and her technique and
vision as a painter advanced
quickly. Her work has
appeared in galleries and pub-
lic spaces around the region.
She was joined by her
husband and her daughter,
Annabel Cohen, as JFS formal-
= ly thanked her for her gift.
