The Red Tent
Lifetime miniseries brings a
beloved book to TV.
Suzanne Chessler I Contributing Writer
nita Diamant
has moved on to other literary projects
since writing The Red Tent nearly two decades ago.
As her latest novel, The Boston Girl, is being released
by Scribner this month, the Lifetime network is pitching the
Diamant-devised tent in the form of a two-evening miniseries
scripted by Elizabeth Chandler (The Sisterhood of the Traveling
Pants) and Anne Meredith (Secrets of Eden).
The author, who had no input into the way her ancient tale was
being adapted for television, is focused on more recent history in
The Boston Girl through the character of Addie Baum, a Jewish
grandmother telling her granddaughter about life in early 20th-
century Beantown.
In the miniseries, the focus is on Dinah, the daughter of Leah
and Jacob, who grows up in a red tent where women of her tribe
gather to share the traditions and troubles of womanhood.
The storyline continues with Dinah's romantic relationship and
how that changes family relationships.
The miniseries, airing at 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Dec. 7-8,
stars Rebecca Ferguson as Dinah, Minnie Driver as Leah, Iain
Glen as Jacob and Morena Baccarin as Rachel. Debra Winger
portrays Rebecca, Jacob's mother, while Will Tudor takes the role
of Joseph, Dinahs brother.
Diamant, a member of Hadassah who visited Michigan in 2011
to address the opening meeting of the Greater Detroit chapter,
answered questions about the miniseries and her new book for
the Jewish News.
Gratitude and perspective
are common feelings among
those hit hardest.
Stacy Gittleman I Contributing Writer
I
f Daniella HarPaz Mechnikov of Huntington Woods
could write some Twitter-style hashtags about her
feelings during the months following this summer's
floods, they would be #perspective and #gratitude.
Just two years ago, Thanksgiving 2012 was the last she
would spend with her mother, who died in early 2013. In
comparison, the sadness caused by this summer's floods —
timed just before her daughter's bat mitzvah — was minor.
Most people had a mourning period for their soggy base-
ments and possessions, but realize it is time to move on.
"In the weeks after the flood, the flood was all anyone
talked about:' Mechnikov said. At the summer soccer
games, the main topics of conversation in Huntington
Woods were 'How much water did you have?' Did FEMA
help you?' and 'How long did it take you to find a contrac-
tor?' Now, we are trying to put the flood behind us. We had
a few bad months, but now we are trying to shake it off."
The Mechnikov basement in Huntington
Woods flooded and after renovation.
