Vignettes From The JN Archives Adam Mosseri Detroit Jewish News Foundation Fellow ixty-seven years ago this month, the United Nations approved a resolution for the creation of a Jewish State. On Nov. 29, 1947, the U.N. General Assembly voted 33-13 in favor of a resolution calling for the area called Palestine to be par- titioned between Arabs and Jews. This partition of Palestine would allow for the formation of a Jewish State. Shortly after the U.N. General Assembly passed the resolution, Britain announced the termi- nation of its Mandate over Palestine. During the period of transition, the United Nations appointed five rep- resentatives to rule the Jewish State in Palestine: Bolivia, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Panama and the Philippines. On the eve of this historic announce- ment, many parties were held in Detroit and were reported by the Detroit Jewish News.
