he 2014 JCC Maccabi Games
& ArtsFest hosted by Detroit
this summer is in the rear-
view mirror.
Now ifs time to look ahead to next
summer. Dallas (Aug. 2-7), Milwaukee
(Aug. 2-7) and Fort Lauderdale (Aug.
9-14) are the 2015 Maccabi Games
hosts, with ArtsFest taking place in Fort
Lauderdale.
The annual kickoff meeting for Detroit
athletes and artists ages 13-16 is Dec. 7.
To make attending the meeting more
convenient for families, it will be held at
1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center
in Oak Park and 4 p.m. at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
"It will be the same meeting:' said
Detroit delegation head Karen Gordon.
"There's no need to attend both:"
Information like costs and tryout
dates will be disseminated, as will where
Detroit athletes will be headed. Coaches
will be introduced as will Gordon and
Franci Silver, the delegation
heads.

inaugural Maccabi Games were held in
Memphis, Tenn. — 1990, 1998 and 2008.
The record for athletes was set in
1998, when there were 3,100 visiting and
about 400 in the Detroit delegation for a
total of 3,500. The record for the largest
Detroit delegation came in 2008, with
500 participants. There were 2,300 visit-
ing athletes that year for a total of 2,800.
Gordon thinks Detroit will be a
Maccabi Games host again, with 2020 as
the target date.
"I have a feeling that by 2020, we'll
either be close to hosting the Maccabi
Games or will have just hosted it:' she
said.
If 2020 becomes the year Detroit hosts
the Maccabi Games, discussions will
need to begin in mid-2017, Gordon said.
"You need to start talking about 21/2
years before you hose,' she said.
Silver served as the Detroit delega-
tion head this summer. There were 290
Detroit athletes and about 50 artists.
