r. Randy Fishman, D.D.S.,
of Southfield learned about
obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA) when he was diagnosed with
the breathing disorder in 2008.
"My wife's complaints about my
snoring getting louder and becoming
more frequent were incentive to find
the problem:' he said. "I was a prac-
ticing dentist for over 30 years and,
because of my own condition, I stud-
ied and completed the coursework
for oral appliance therapy used by
dentists for the treatment of OSA:'
He constructed his first oral appli-
ance for himself and quickly real-
ized that his breathing obstruction
problems were almost completely
eliminated when his appliance was
in place while sleeping. As a result,
Fishman decided to pursue the study
and treatment of OSA and snoring
and make the information available
to his patients.
After selling his practice two years
ago, Fishman focused his career
exclusively on dental sleep medicine
and treatment.
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder
in which people often stop breath-
ing many times during their sleep
cycle because of a blockage in their
airways. The most common causes
of these blockages include throat
muscles, tongue, tonsils or the soft
palate falling back into the throat.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious
condition and needs to be treated.
The U.S. Centers for Disease
Control estimates that more than 12
million Americans have problems
sleeping because of OSA. A large
number are undiagnosed.
A sleep physician diagnoses the
problem by monitoring the patient's
brain activity when asleep. The phy-
sician then evaluates the collected
data, making a diagnosis and recom-
mends a treatment. Dentists trained
in sleep medicine work with sleep
physicians to treat OSA with oral
appliance therapy.
Loud snoring was also a major
incentive to seek help for Dr. Michael
Eichenhorn, M.D., division head
emeritus of Pulmonary, Critical Care
and Sleep Medicine at Henry Ford
Health Systems. After being diag-
nosed with borderline mild-moder-
ate sleep apnea, he went directly to
his dentist, Fishman, to help resolve
the problem. Fishman created an oral
appliance for him.
"The results were dramatic:'
Eichenhorn said. "My snoring and
the noises I made during my sleep
were completely eliminated. My wife
