H

eather Saks Gould always imag-
ined that when her son Cory
got older, one of the things they
would forge a strong connection over
would be a love of sports. Gould, 43, is
a longtime Tiger fan who often felt she
had a dream job working for the Major
League Baseball Players Association.
Cory, now 13, couldn't care less about
baseball. His passion includes all things
"dogs." He has Asperger's Syndrome and
happens to have an immeasurable wealth
of knowledge about canines. His expertise
impresses everyone he meets in the dog
world. Plus, he has an incredible ability
to draw any breed of dog. His family has
thousands of his drawings.
"He pretty much knows every fact
there is to know about dogs:' said Gould,
a West Bloomfield High School gradu-
ate who spent several summers at Camp
Tamarack
"When we went to PetSmart, the dog
park or dog shows, people were so fasci-
nated by him that I kept thinking, 'There
is a story here than needs to be told:"
As Gould began to research the possibil-
ity of a documentary film about Cory, she
discovered that the key to a good one is
a topic that people find truly fascinating.
Boston filmmaker Tim O'Donnell was so
charmed by Cory's story that he eagerly
agreed to capture the boy's passion in a
new documentary, For the Love of Dogs.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Heather Saks
Gould will host a screening of this award-
winning film at the Maple Theater in
Bloomfield Township. The screening
begins at 7:15 p.m., followed by a ques-
tion-and-answer session with Gould and a
dessert reception.
She plans to donate a portion of all pro-
ceeds to the Friendship Circle, a nonprofit
organization in West Bloomfield offering
a variety of programs and services to chil-
dren with special needs and their families.
Gould, who currently resides in
Scottsdale, Ariz., with husband Jonathan,
daughter Mallory and Cory, is excited
about bringing her film home to family

and friends, including her father, Stan
Saks of Southfield.
After filming Cory at home, in school,
during therapy sessions and at the two
biggest dog shows in the country (the
Westminster Dog Show and the National
Dog Show), O'Donnell ended up with 26
hours of footage, which he condensed into
the 26-minute documentary.
"When first talking to Heather over the
phone, I remember thinking, 'How cool!"'
said the filmmaker. An 11-year-old boy
and everything-dog-genius going to his
first-ever dog show, which happens to be
the biggest one of the year. And he has
autism:'
For the Love of Dogs lets audiences see
how Cory's passion for dogs allows him
to connect with those around him, some-
thing that is difficult for Cory and others
with Asperger's Syndrome.
The documentary ends with Cory and
his mom at the Westminster show in
New York When officials at Westminster
learned about Cory, they eagerly invited
him to the show.
"When I saw his face and how it lit
up, I realized this was his All-Star game
and these were his players. He knew all
the statistics on these dogs and, like a
fan, rooted for the one he wanted to win.
That's where we found our connection;
our mutual love of dogs connected us in a
really special way:' said Gould.
Since the film was completed at the end
of 2013, For the Love of Dogs has been
shown in more than a dozen film festivals,
including the Independent Film Festival
of Boston (Best Short Documentary and
Audience Award).
