hmuly Yanklowitz, a
renowned international
author and inspiring
young Modern Orthodox rabbi,
will speak on "Jewish Ethics and
Social Justice" at Eastern Michigan
University on Dec. 2.
"Rabbi Yanklowitz's name has
become synonymous with the call
for ethical renewal and social jus-
tice within the American Jewish
community:' said Dr. Jonathan
Sarna, professor of Jewish Studies
in the department of Near Eastern
and Judaic Studies at Brandeis
University.
In 2010, Yanklowitz emerged
a star on the PBS Independent
Lens documentary The Calling.
Determined to make Judaism rel-
evant and exciting to Americans,
he insisted that faith is inextricably
bound up with the struggle for
social justice — that study of the
Torah requires a commitment to
ethical living. He has since taken
on labor rights, penal reform and
immigration policy. He has advo-
cated for LGBT inclusion, including
support for gay marriage. And he is
a voice for animal welfare.
From 2010-2012, Yanklowitz
served as senior Jewish educator
and director of Jewish life at UCLA
Hillel. He has taught at UCLA Law
School and at Barnard College.
Yanklowitz is founder and presi-
dent of Uri L'Tzedek, the Orthodox
social justice movement. He is
executive director of Valley Beit
Midrash, a collaborative organiza-
tion providing the Phoenix Jewish
community programming like the
Start Me Up Fellowship, an incuba-
tor for Jewish social entrepreneurs
to launch innovative social ven-
tures.
Yanklowitz, 33, has written six
books, including Jewish Ethics and
Social Justice: A Guide for the 21st
Century and The Soul of Jewish
Social Justice.
