to the larger community.
There have yet to be any inci-
dents of anti-Semitism at NMU,
and the hope is that it will stay that
way.

Local Temple's Support

Campus is approximately 30 min-
utes from Temple Beth Shalom in
Ishpeming. We gathered with mem-
bers for High Holiday services and
have celebrated Shabbats with them.
Those of us who have attended ser-
vices could not be more thankful for
how welcoming they are to students.
There are seven synagogues north
of the 45th Parallel. Who would
have thought, right?! A few years
back, all seven synagogues had
female presidents. During this time,
they concluded that they wanted to
bring each small community togeth-
er and, from this desire, Udor v'Dor
Northern Michigan Jewish Women
Rural Leadership Consortium was
born.
They gather four times a year
to promote the Jewish future of
Northern Michigan and have a
retreat dedicated to women's spiri-
tuality.
NMU will have three students

represented at the Women's
Spirituality Retreat in St. Ignace
this month. This is the first time
that students have taken interest in
the larger picture, and that is really
something to celebrate.
As we begin to create Jewish
life on campus here at NMU, our
friends at Michigan Technological
University in Houghton are also
beginning to strengthen their own
community.
Lorne Newhouse, with the sup-
port of the Hillel Campus Alliance
of Michigan, is beginning to connect
and build relationships with Jewish
students at Michigan Tech. He is
excited to bring people together to
celebrate Shabbat and define what it
means to be Jewish on campus.
Together, we are working closely
to make sure that we are laying
down a structure that benefits
Jewish life in Northern Michigan.
Feel free to reach out to us if you
know of anyone interested in help-
ing grow Jewish life in the Upper
Peninsula: Lauren at LYellen@nmu.

Wolverines from page 30

The Wolverines for Israel event led by two pro-Israel Jewish
student groups provided a show of strength and solidarity
and prompted discussions on the U-M Diag.

just a physical reminder of the strong support
for Israel that exists on our campus. The pow-
erful display of shirts left the students feeling
comforted and empowered.
No matter who was wearing the shirt — a
friend, a classmate or a random passerby —
he or she felt a sense of connection, a sense
of belonging. We understood on that day
that we all shared one thing in common —
our unwavering support for our Jewish state.
The Wolverines for Israel T-shirt campaign

set an optimistic tone on U-M's campus.
Although we may face events this semester
that delegitimize the state of Israel, we con-
tinue engaging in pro-Israel events, knowing
that we have a strong community to stand
with and call upon. @
