Sen. Levin To Be Feted
At ADL Award Dinner

T

he Anti-Defamation League
Michigan Region will present
its prestigious Torch of Liberty
Award to U.S. Sen. Carl Levin at its
2014 Torch of Liberty Award Dinner on
Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Tam-O-Shanter
Country Club in West Bloomfield.
For 101 years, the ADL has fought
the defamation of the Jewish people and
fought for just and fair treatment for all.
The ADI:s work is accomplished along
with great leaders who
take on the mantle
of public service and
work diligently to
build a nation based
on democracy, justice
and strength.
Across the nation,
ADL honors such indi-

viduals with the Torch
Levin
of Liberty Award.
Levin's work has epito-
mized these ADL values.
"I can envision no one more deserv-
ing of the Torch of Liberty Award; said
Hannan Lis, who along with his wife,
Lisa, serves as honorary co-chair of the
dinner host committee. "For 50 years,
Sen. Levin has represented the interests
of the people of Michigan and furthered
the democratic ideals on which this

nation was founded."
From the first piece of legislation he
introduced as a U.S. senator — a bill
to end discrimination by credit card
companies — Levin has spoken up for
working families, held powerful institu-
tions accountable and worked to build
an America that lives up to the ideals of
its founders.
He has become one of the nation's
most respected leaders on national
security, a powerful voice for equality
and justice, and a fighter for economic
fairness.
Since joining the Senate, he has
been a member the Armed Services
Committee. From 2001 to 2003 and
again from 2007 to the present, he has
been the committee's chairman.
"I am honored to be the recipient of
ADL's Torch of Liberty Award and to
lend my support to the important work
of the ADL," Levin said.
The dinner begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 10
at Tam-O-Shanter in West Bloomfield.
Individual tickets are $250 each, with a
discounted ticket of $136 available for
those aged 36 and under. Sponsorship
packages are available. Dinner reserva-
tions and ads for the tribute book are due

And an even greater outcome to
Israel, science and education.

V

I believe the Jewish people should always contribute

to Jewish causes. If we don't, who else will? There are so

many urgent, worthwhile causes. What to do? Support

medical research? Give to my beloved Israel? No one has

unlimited funds—certainly not me. So where to start;
where to give?

Then I saw an ad about AFHU Hebrew University Gift

Annuities supporting The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
I read up on HU. It was everything I care about in
one package.

HU's contributions to Israel and the world are as
wide-ranging as they are impactful.

When you create a secure AFHU Hebrew University Gift

This way I can afford to give more to all the causes
closest to my heart.

Friendship Circle joins fundraising effort.

F

irst came Thanksgiving, then
came Black Friday, followed
by Cyber Monday. Now comes
#GivingTuesday, a global day started in
2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y and the
United Nations Foundation dedicated to
giving back by using the power of partners
— charities, families, businesses and indi-
viduals — to change how we think about
and participate in the season of giving.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Friendship Circle
will launch its inaugural #GivingTuesday
campaign that will raise awareness and
funds for the Farber Soul Center. Located
at Drake and Walnut Lake roads in West
Bloomfield, this facility will build upon
Friendship Circle's mission of inclusion by
uncovering the talents and revealing the
soul of each individual.
Through the generosity of William
and Audrey Farber, Friendship Circle
is extending its programming into the
lives of adults with special needs through
the culinary, digital and traditional arts,
which give them much-needed on-the-job
training.

The Soul Center will contain art stu-
dios, a gallery and cafe and will be the
home of the new Soul Studio Arts &
Culinary Program. This program will
give young adults with special needs the
opportunity to learn vocational skills,
harness their creativity and reveal their
talents to the community.
Friendship Circle plans to inspire
people this holiday season to take col-
laborative action to improve their local
communities, give back in smarter, better
ways to the charities and causes they sup-
port to help create a better world.
#GivingTuesday will harness the power
of social media to create awareness dur-
ing this time of giving. It's simple: spread
the word, tell family and friends about
Friendship Circle's #GivingTuesday. Visit
www.friendshipcircle.org/soul for more
information on this campaign. Be part of
a new tradition of generosity.
Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield
has been providing assistance and support
for more than 3,000 families of children
with special needs since 1994.
