Passion For Life R alph Ehrenpreis (June 9, 1942-Oct. 18, 2014) wrote a first draft of his obituary over the years, but often quipped that he wanted it to be published many years in the future, if at all. Ralph was born in Memphis, Tenn., to Iry and Bess Ehrenpreis and shortly thereafter moved to Oak Park, where he grew up with his only sister, Tobi. When Ralph was 10, his father passed away and there began his everlasting quest to avoid his own death. Ralph went to the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 1963. Then, he moved to California to marry Sandra Jackson and to attend Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, where he received his juris doctor in 1967. After mov- ing to Los Angeles to work for a large law firm, he quickly found his niche by establishing an immigration law practice more than 40 years ago, which continues to be one of the most successful such firms in the country. His passion for his work was only surpassed by his love of jazz, theater, film, exercise, literature and his family. Over the years, he amassed a remarkable and vast collection of jazz recordings. He played his music loud, scrutinizing every word of the liner notes, had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the music and artists, and was a scholar of all things jazz. He was a voracious reader, with his home filled with DR. EDWARD GORDON, 69, of Oak Park, died Oct. 22, 2014. He received his D.P.M. from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and had a Gordon bachelor of science from Wayne State University. He held licensure in California, Michigan and Ohio. His career included being chief of podiatry at Bi-County Community Hospital and acting chief of podia- try then chief of podiatry at St. John Hospital in Macomb and assistant chief of podiatry. Dr. Gordon was a board of directors member for American Association of Foot Care Center and a medical director shelves of books from decades of interests. Although he will be remembered for his tireless commit- ment to his law practice, most will remember a man with an unsurpassed sense of humor, wry and quick wit, and sarcasm. As much as he loved making others laugh, he loved making himself laugh even more. Beneath his irreverence was a man who loved his friends, made strangers smile and made time every day of his life to be there for his closest family. So many people loved and admired his insatiable curiosity, depth of interests, sheer intellect, and charisma and warmth. He was deeply committed to his wife of 18 years, Jennifer Kaufman; his three children, Ira, Jeff and Jason; his daugh- ters-in-law, Ellen and Brooke; his stepchildren, Darian and Ben; and his three grandchildren, Lindsay, Ashley and Zachary. In the ultimate irony, his death was tragic like that of his father and so many of the jazz figures who were his heroes. Services were held at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles on Oct. 22. An adviser for American Arbitration Association and the Michigan Peer Review Organization, he also held teaching appointments at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and Dr. Scholl's College of Podiatric Medicine in Illinois, where he was an adjunct clinical instructor. He held hospital appointments at Bi-County Community Hospital, St. John Hospital, Madison Community Hospital, Saratoga Community Hospital, Plymouth General Hospital and Detroit Central Hospital. He was very proud of his professional societies' memberships, including Pi Delta National Podiatric Honor Society. The personal consultant for many doctors in the local area, he was considered the "go-to-guy" for a multitude of professional questions. ❑ He loved to travel and was passionate about his family and scuba diving. Dr. Gordon is survived by his wife of 18 years, Aviva Gordon; children, Kristen and Chris Sarris of Rochester Hills, Binyomin Rider of Oak Park, Sarah Rider of Oak Park, Estie Rider of Oak Park; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Mickey and Claudia Gordon of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Grant, Jake, Chase; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Judy and Bruce Herman, Sandy and Amy Barris; nieces, nephews and other rela- tives.
