Queen of Orchard Street
It's 1913, and Malka Treynovsky and
her family are heading off to America,
the land of gold and movie stars!
But when they arrive, all they find is
poverty and crowded tenements, and
Malka is abandoned on the street.
Then she meets an Italian ices ped-
dler who takes her in. As an adult,
she meets a handsome radical named
Albert who takes her across the
country in an ice-cream truck. Malka
soon becomes Lillian, "the Ice Cream
Queen:' and she builds an empire with
many devoted fans.
But Malka is not the endearing per-
sonality she appears to be, and when
her past comes back to haunt her,
Malka will find herself facing the big-
gest challenge of her life.

Palestinian independence; Dahlia Barr
is an Israeli human-rights lawyer.
Israel's secret service asks Dahlia
to serve as arbiter on when to use the
harshest interrogation methods on
prisoners, and she decides to accept
the job. Perhaps she can change the
system, after all.
But then she discovers that one
prisoner to be interrogated is Edward
Al-Masri, an acquaintance of hers.
And then there's this bit of news that
