LUNCH WITH
THE AUTHORS

Noon Thursday, Nov. 13 (WB)
Pam Jenoff: The Winter Guest

Eighteen-year-old Ruth and Helena
Nowak are twins who, though very
different, are united in their effort to
care for their younger siblings. The
Nazis have invaded their small Polish
town, and everything is a struggle.
Then Helena happens upon a
stranded soldier named Sam. Not
only is he American, he's Jewish. Yet
Helena helps him hide, and she soon
finds herself falling in love. The two
decide they must flee — but what
happens next is nothing anyone could
ever have anticipated. Pam Jenoff

also will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday,
Nov. 13 (OP).
AND
Randy Susan Meyers: Accidents of
Marriage

Once, Maddy and Ben were wildly
in love.
Now, Ben is just wild.
Maddy is a social worker and mom
to three with her husband, Ben, a
public defender with a volatile temper.
Sometimes Maddy asserts herself;
other days she does everything she
can to avoid confrontation. Then
one day Ben becomes so violent that
Maddy ends up in the hospital.
Accidents of Marriage is a provoca-
tive novel that considers the terrible
results of abuse not only on a husband
and wife but an entire family.
Tickets are $30, which includes lunch
in Marion and David Handleman Hall.
Reservations requested by Oct. 31.

IRWIN SHAW NIGHT

8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 (WB)
Daniel Gordis: Menachem Begin:
The Battle for Israel's Soul

He was the Israeli prime minister
who signed the Camp David Accords
in 1979, establishing peace (however
shaky) with Egypt.
Menachem Begin also was a fer-

vent Zionist and an outspoken leader
dedicated to bringing all Jews to their
homeland (he put full efforts into sav-
ing Soviet Jews and ordered the evac-
uation of Ethiopian Jews to Israel). He
called for Israel's bombing of a nuclear
reactor in Iraq in 1981. And he liked
formality, rarely leaving his home
without being garbed in a suit.
Daniel Gordis has written a compel-
ling biography of a complex man who
passionately loved Israel.
Tickets are $18.

COMEDY NIGHT

8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 (WB)
Introduction by Alan Muskovitz
Annabelle Gurwitch: I See You
Made an Effort: Compliments,
Indignities, and Survival Stories
from the Edge of 50

There he is: Mr. Dreamboat.
Working at the Genius Bar. Of course,
he'll be interested in a middle-aged
woman, right?
Or, how about your trip to the
department store, where the cosmetics
consultant presents you with a huge
collection of creams for those pesky,
but prevalent, wrinkles.
I See Your Made an Effort is come-
dian Annabelle Gurwitch's wonder-
fully amusing collection of essays
about life after 50. Witty and honest,
they are enough to make middle-age
look fun — almost.
Tickets are $18.
