t's hard to imagine any famous actor

as a young "nobody:' especially a leg-
endary success like Carl Reiner. Enter
Laughing the Joseph Stein play based on
Reiner's semi-autobiographical novel of
the same name — now running at Jewish
Ensemble Theatre — tells the story of
David Kolowitz, an aspiring young actor
with grandiose dreams he is determined to
bring to fruition.
The play, which opened on Broadway
in 1963, is set in mid-1930s New York,
where David, played enthusiastically by TJ
Corbett ("the Boy" in Mitch
Albom's Ernie), spends his
days making deliveries for his
tolerant but realistic boss, Mr.
Foreman (Greg Trzaskoma), owner of a
hat-machine company.
David's dreams of fame and fortune are
pushed further out of reach by his parents
(Peggy Thorp and Jerry Gerard), who
dream of sending their son to pharmacy
school.
David eagerly accepts a role with a small
struggling theater group run by an aging
former star called Marlowe (Charles Van
Hoose), despite the nonexistent pay and
late hours.
David's new endeavor is further com-
plicated not only by the opposition he
receives from his parents but from Mr.
Foreman, who is upset by David's irregular
hours, and his normally sweet girlfriend,
Wanda (Katy Kujala), who is suspicious of
the time he is spending with his new lead-
ing lady, Angela (Kathryn P. Mahard).
Cheered on by his workplace friend
Marvin (Nick Hartman), David engages

in a series of events and interactions laced
with large doses of slapstick and, of course,
laughter.
There are 16 cast members in all, unusu-
ally large for a JET production, but Mary
Bremer's direction keeps the frequent
scene changes and numerous comings
and goings of the actors smooth and well-
paced.
While the parts are well-acted, the char-
acters are somewhat simplistic, with the
notable exception of Mr. Foreman, whom
Trzaskoma imbues with a droll sense of
humor and a comfortably familiar New
York Old-World Jewish accent.
The role of the buxom receptionist, Miss
B, usually played by Amanda Lewan, was
admirably performed by under-
study Emily Sitton at Sunday's
matinee. Patrick O'Connor
Cronin elicits laughs as her
"gentleman friend:' Roger.
The most distinguishing characteristic
of the set by Daniel C. Walker, who also
designed the lighting, is a stage-wide
backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, with
time reflected by varying colors and lights.
Props by Diane E. Ulseth include retro
black telephones and a vintage red Formica
table with matching vinyl chairs. Christa
Koerner's costumes are pure '30s — from
David's knickers and argyle socks to
Marlowe's period scarf and smoking jacket.
An assortment of tunes from the era is
courtesy of sound designer Matt Lira.
