The Holocaust Memorial Center (HMC)
Zekelman Family Campus is hosting its
30th Anniversary Dinner, Sunday, Nov.
9, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield.
The annual fundraising event, which
begins at 5:30 p.m., will honor Dr.
Richard K. Stoler of Bloomfield Township
for his dedication and commitment to
the center. Attorney, activist and TV ana-
lyst Alan Dershowitz will deliver the key-
note address and discuss anti-Semitism
and racism in the world today.
Stoler, an ear, nose and throat doctor
with offices in Livonia and Garden City, is
dedicated to preserving the past so future
generations can learn
from it by connecting
members of the com-
munity to its Eastern
European roots. His
main area of focus cen-
ters within a 60-mile
radius of Bereznitz in
the Ukraine.
Richard Stoler
Through the guid-
ance and assistance of HMC Head
Librarian Feiga Weiss and Temple Beth El
Historical Society Archivist Jan Durecki,
Stoler estimates he has helped approxi-
mately 300 people over the past decade
find distant relatives, their places of birth
and learn their families' history.

"In two generations, people might
want to figure out where they came
from," he said. "I hope that my work
helps them answer that question:'
He is a strong advocate of preserving
documents, photos and treasures as a
means to keep tangible memories of the
past. The HMC has offered space to those
wishing to store such artifacts.
Dershowitz is a prolific lawyer, author
and political commentator. He also is
the Felix Frankfurter
Professor of Law at
Harvard Law School,
where he has been
part of the faculty
since age 25. He has
been involved in sev-
eral high-profile legal
cases, including his
Alan
role in overturning the Dershowitz
conviction of Claus von
Bulow for the attempted murder of his
wife, Sunny. He also is the author of 30
fiction and nonfiction works.
Chairpersons for the dinner are Jackie
and Joel Smith. Lori and Steven Weisberg
are the dinner advisers.
Reservations for the dinner are
required. For tickets, contact Jackie
Yashinsky at (248) 553-2400 (ext. 29) or

Veterans Day Walk/Run Set

The law offices of Goodman Acker in
Southfield is stepping up this Veterans
Day to honor veterans as well as help
reduce the problem of veterans' home-
lessness.
Like many communities around the
country, this area has people who are
homeless. In Detroit alone, 38 percent of
those homeless are our military veterans.
Caring for Our Homeless Veterans
run/walk and collection drive will be
held from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
11, at Detroit Tough Gym, 1224 Beech
St, Detroit. Runs/walks will take place at
9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30
p.m. The course is a 2.5-mile route going
from the Mariners Inn to the Michigan
Veterans Foundation at 2770 Park Ave.
and back to Detroit Tough Gym.
The goal is to raise funds and collect
goods for homeless military veterans
for the Michigan Veterans Foundation,
a nonprofit agency founded by veterans
that provides a variety of services to
veterans, including transitional housing,
veteran rescue, life skills and employment
counseling, education, health care, PTSD
counseling, substance abuse intervention,
legal assistance, benefits counseling and
housing placement assistance.

Jerry Acker, senior partner of
Goodman Acker, said, "My father honor-
ably served in Korea and partner/attorney
Barry J. Goodman's father was a reservist
as well. We know, through them, the sac-
rifices that veterans make, and we want
to pay tribute to them this Veterans Day.
Let's let them know their great sacrifices
have not been forgotten.
"Goodman Acker and Detroit Tough
Gym decided to start an initiative to
help honor our heroes and give them the
support they need:' he said. "With your
help we can help eliminate homelessness
among our Detroit veterans:'
Participants for the run/walk can
register at www.GoodmanAcketcom/
caringforourveterans. Throughout the
event, donations of gently used or new
clothing and non-disposable toiletries will
be collected, or items may be dropped off
before the day of the event through Nov.
10 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Goodman Acker
P.C., 17000 W 10 Mile in Southfield or at
Detroit Tough Gym.
Tim Horton's is donating break-
fast, while lunch and dinner will be
provided by McShane's Irish Pub and
Slows Bar-B-Q to people who stop by to
contribute.
