Magen David Adom:
Israel's 'Social Iron Dome'
Every day, Magen David Adorn, Israel's
national "911," emergency medical
and ambulance agency and operator
of Israel's only blood bank, positively
impacts the lives of millions of Israelis.
MDA is not government funded,
which is why the Dr. John J. Mames
Chapter-Michigan Region of American
Friends of Magen David Adom has
worked so hard, since 1967, to raise
more than $34 million for MDA,
including nine new ambulances over
the last nine months.
Kudos to Keri Guten Cohen for
her coverage of MDA's work during
Operation Protective Edge and to Robert
Sklar for his coverage of our recent Sept.
11 gala where the founders of the chap-
ter were honored and Professor Shinar,
M.D., shared about the great need to
build a new underground, fully filtered
blood bank to serve all of Israel's people
and the Israel Defense Forces.
Israel cannot survive without its
own safe, secure and sufficient blood
supply. This once-in-a-lifetime project
will help ensure Israel's national blood
supply well into the 21st century.
Special thanks also for showcasing
the experiences of three of our young
adults who served this past summer
Leslie Bash
as MDA overseas volunteers: Hanna
Berlin, Teddy Sallen and Ben Cher.

need for emergency medical equip-
ment and supplies, including 100
ambulances for 2015, and the new
National MDA Blood Center project,

Todah rabah, thank you, to our current
supporters and to those who wish to join
us and make a difference in the health,
security and welfare of all Israelis.

No More Treif
I am continually disgusted with Danny
Raskin, in his column, extolling the
virtues of restaurants that serve (in
particular, last week's issue) sausage,
crab cakes and scallops. I am not so
naive as to think that modern Jews do
not eat treif. However, it is inexcusable
that your newspaper continues to print
his column, with such religious impro-
priety. This has been occurring for
many years, yet the editors continue to
allow it. He should be instructed not
to recommend such foods or restau-

Correction
In the story "Reunited" (page 8, Oct.
16), there was a historical error. The
man who became president upon the
death of Franklin D. Roosevelt was
Harry S. Truman.

Story Update
In the week since the story "Cure in
the Future?" (page 44, Oct. 16) ran
about an Israeli researcher working
on a cure for Type 1 diabetes, the cel-
lular therapy company, Orgenesis, she
is associated with received a patent
for the technology supporting its cell-
based therapy. The U.S. patent recog-
nizes the pioneering work of Dr. Sarah
Ferber and the Orgenesis research
team that used the technology to suc-
cessfully reprogram human liver cells
into glucose-responsive, fully func-
tional insulin-producing cells.

Yes, if you can. Here is
the issue — your relative
or close friend has found
themselves buried in credit
card debt and they have come to you
and asked for help — meaning, "Can
you loan me the money to pay off the
cards?" Whether you can and will help
is a personal question for you to answer.
I do, however, have a thought. If they
need $75,000 to pay off the cards — that's
a lot of cash. Instead, since we know we
can settle this debt over a 14 to 24 month
period in the range of $30,000 (which
amounts to about $1,600 per month) my
suggestion is that before you say yes or
no - you should suggest to them that
they meet with us. Perhaps they can
manage the $1,600/month or a portion of
it and you can cover the difference. This
would be a lot better way to accomplish
the goal for them and you!. Is this a
dream? No — we do it all the time. It is a
great solution and a dream come true.
