ackie Kallen is one of the first,
and perhaps the most success-
ful, women in the sport of box-
ing. Women managers and promoters
are still very rare in the world of boxing.
Kallen has defied the odds for a long
time.
Born and raised in a middle-class
Jewish family in Detroit, Kallen began
her career as an entertainment journal-
ist, writing about celebrities such as
Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the
Rolling Stones. After interviewing one of
Detroit's most famous boxing champions
— Thomas Hearns — she was smit-
ten with the sport. Kallen then spent
10 years as the publicist for Hearns. In
1988, she struck out on her own and has
managed a number of boxers.

DEPARTMENTS

Kallen is still active as a manager
and promoter, and is one of the few yet
influential women in the sport today.
In 1997, Kallen was inducted into the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. ❑
