sports Special Anniversaries Steve Stein Contributing Writer I 2014 Inductees T he Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation and its Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame are celebrating special anniversaries this year. It's the 30th year for the foundation and the 30th annual induction dinner for the Hall of Fame. The foundation is a not-for-profit philanthropic organization commit- ted to honoring Jewish individuals connected to Michigan who have distinguished themselves through sports, and foster Jewish identity through athletics. Through its efforts, which also include presenting the annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational, more than $1 million has been raised to help fight cancer. Other worthy programs and causes, including the recent JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest hosted by Detroit, also are provided funding. The 2014 Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony will be Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, the Hall of Fame's home. A crowd of more than 300 is expected to attend. Alan Davis, Alfred "Obbie" Friedman, Jerry Greenberg, Erin Konheim Mandras and Stuart Schwartz will be inducted. Edward Kozloff will receive the Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award and Robert Basch, Irwin Cohen, Al Delidow, Ted Kaczander and Jerry Lewis will be presented Pillars of Excellence awards. This is the third year for the Pillars of Excellence program, which honors lifetime achievement in sports and community involvement. Foundation executive director David Blatt said about half the crowd the last two years was there to sup- port the Pillars of Excellence recipi- ents. Also honored Oct. 28 will be Dylan Deitch and Nikki Wald from Bloomfield Hills and North Farmington high schools, the Jewish News male and female high school athletes of the year, along with Bill Hertz Memorial Scholarship recipi- ents Jacob and Marlee Rothman, brother and sister from Berkley High School. "I'm sure my father would be thrilled to have an award like this named for him," said Ron Foon, 70, Alvin Foon's son and secretary of the foundation board. "It took a lot of will power and tenacity to get the foundation going, and those who have followed have done a wonderful job keeping it strong" Alvin Foon had plenty of help get- ting the foundation off the ground. He convinced friends Seymour Brode, Mickey Fishman, Billy Jacobs, Myron Milgrom and Robert Steinberg to join him, and the small but vibrant group transformed an idea into reality. Oct. 28 will be a special night for 2000 Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Deitch. His son Dylan Deitch is the the Jewish News Male High School Athlete of the Year. "One of the best parts of being a parent is being able to live vicariously through your children," Jeff Deitch said. "What I accomplished doesn't compare to what Dylan did last year during his senior year in high school."
