Under One Roof
NEXTGen Detroit and Bais Chabad
host second annual Sukkot celebration.
T
he Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's NEXTGen
Detroit and Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center presented the
second annual Good Sukkos Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 12, in
West Bloomfield. Beautifully draped with fabric and strung
up with lights, the sukkah quickly filled up as 120 young adults came
together to celebrate the holiday with a homemade Israeli feast, music
and conversation with new and old friends.
Good Sukkos Detroit is a once-a-year special edition of NEXTGen
Detroit's monthly Good Shabbos Detroit series, which invites young
adults to experience a Friday night service and meal at different
congregations across Metro Detroit.
Rabbi Shneur and Zeesy Silberberg have graciously hosted the event
at Bais Chabad for the past two years, creating a warm and inspiring
environment to enjoy Sukkot as a community and explore the many
modern lessons that can be learned from dwelling in a sukkah. Bais
Chabad is home to a thriving young adult community and hosts a variety
of programs throughout the year geared to singles and young couples.
"When we leave our homes, we leave the walls that separate 'your
space' and 'my space,' and we're able to unite in a way that we don't
often get during the year," Silberberg said in his opening remarks.
Also present was special guest speaker and now local resident Dmitriy
Salita, a champion boxer and subject of the documentary Orthodox
Stance. He spoke about the challenges and rewards of being an
observant Jew and a professional athlete.
"Good Sukkos Detroit and the Good Shabbos Detroit series are
really about bringing people together," said Joshua Goldberg, NEXTGen
Detroit's vice president of Jewish life. "Tonight, we had NEXTGen Board
members and lay leaders here; we had Israeli guests in town for the teen
mission reunion; we had the Repair the World Fellows. We had people
who are new to town and people who have lived here all their lives.
Having such a diverse crowd of young Jewish adults under one sukkah's
roof is incredible."
The event was sponsored by the Farbman Group.
