Association of Personal Historians and
sought training to enter the field:' says
Gilbert, 68.
"While at an exhibit about the
Polish resistance, I found out about
Lola Lieber, who had been perceived
as a gentile while on the run from the
Nazis. Her story so engaged me that
I started to think about other women
whose stories hadn't been told:'
Gilbert looked for others by sending
out queries to synagogues, commu-
nity centers and Jewish organizations.
Ending up with vast amounts of mate-
rial, she decided to write a series of
books, each focusing on women in one
country.
"The book I'll be talking about in
Michigan is my first because I could
connect with Polish women in the
United States and Canada more read-
ily and because they spoke English:'
says Gilbert, active with the Brandeis
National Committee, Hadassah and
various Jewish genealogy societies.
Weeks before Gilbert's presenta-
tion on Oct. 19, there will be a talk
by Miriam Brysk, also profiled in the
book. Brysk, who lives in Ann Arbor,
will discuss her own history and the
digital artistry dedicated to images
of the Holocaust that she developed
and has shown through some 30 solo
exhibits.
"I will give historical context to Faye
Schulman's work and talk about the
Jewish partisans:' says Brysk. "I also
will show five of my latest artworks
and explain what made Jews escape to
the forests:'
Brysk wants people to understand
the impact of the partisans in a time
when Jews in the Soviet Union were
being taken out of ghettos and shot.
"I went back to Europe in 2001 to
visit the ghettos and the camps," Brysk
says. "Because of the emotions I felt, I
