JN

he Jewish News has upheld its
standard of writing by captur-
ing 13 awards in a recent con-
test sponsored by the Michigan Press
Association. The recognition was high-
lighted by a first-place win for General
Excellence in the category of weekly
newspapers with circulations between
10,000 and 24,999.
"Wow, this paper has everything!
Nice layout, design, ads are exceptional
and photography is wonderful. Very,
very nice!" the judges wrote.
The JN also won second place in
the "special sections" category for its
Celebrate! section and first place for its
overall design. Its editorial pages were
given an honorable mention.
In writing categories, the paper
earned many awards. Editorial
Assistant Sy Manello won first place in
the "local columns" category. "These
are very clever, fun, well-written col-
umns. You put a smile on my face and
this column is a nice, welcome break
in the reader's day. The refreshing tone
put this one in first place:' the judges
wrote.
Contributing Editor Robert Sklar
was recognized with first place in the
"editorial writing" category and given
an honorable mention in the "local
columns" category.

Contributing writer Esther Alweiss
Ingber won first place out of 56 entries
in feature writing for her story "Night
of Broken Glass:' published for the
anniversary of Kristallnacht. "The
personal remembrances in this story
make something that you study in
history books so much more real and
personal:' the judges wrote.
Senior Copy Editor David Sachs won
third place in feature writing for his
obituary of Sally Horwitz, "Sally's Story
of Courage and Love." The judges
wrote, "It was interesting to read this
story about a woman that not only
survived something terrible, but left a
lasting legacy for others to follow."
Contributing Writer Ruthan Brodsky
won first place in "news enterprise
reporting" for her story, "Helping
Hands:' about health care advocates.
She also earned an honorable mention
for her story "High-Tech Medicine:'
Contributing Writer Ronelle Grier
won an honorable mention in the
spot news story" category with her
story, "Historic Ruling; on a judge's
decision to challenge Michigan's ban
on same-sex marriage.
We look forward to continuing our
tradition of award-winning presenta-
tion of the news of the Detroit Jewish
community.
