MATHOG, 75, of

Rochester, died
Oct. 10, 2014.
He was a
professor and
chairman of the
Department of
Mathog
Otolaryngology
at Wayne State University from
1977 to 2014. He was the chief
of otolaryngology at Harper and
Detroit Receiving hospitals from
1977 to 2007 and president/chair-
man of the board of the Lions
Hearing Center of Michigan since
2000. Prior to these appoint-
ments, Dr. Mathog was an assis-
tant and associate professor at the
University of Minnesota and chief
of otolaryngology at Hennepin
County Hospital.
As a specialist in otolaryngol-
ogy, Dr. Mathog achieved an
international reputation in facial
trauma, cancer and rehabilitative
surgery. He made major innova-
tive contributions in his field and
published more than 200 papers
and chapters in scientific journals
and books on a range of issues,
including numerous national
and international presentations
in his field. Among his scholarly
contributions, Dr. Mathog is well
known for his seminal Textbook of
Maxillofacial Trauma, published
in 1983, and Atlas of Craniofacial
Trauma, published in 1992 and
2012.
His honors include the
Valentine Mott Medal for pro-
ficiency and anatomy, multiple
citations in Who's Who of the
World, America and Midwest
and the Award of Merit from
the American Academy of
Otolaryngology. In addition, Dr.
Mathog trained numerous col-
leagues who've gone on to be
professors and chairmen of their
respective departments.
Dr. Mathog is survived by his
wife of 50 years, Deena Mathog;
children, Tiby Alecia, Jason,
Heather and Lauren; five grand-
children.
