For more than 42 years, he was an anesthesiologist at William Beaumont Merkle Hospital, where he served as the chief of the Department of Anesthesiology from 1981-1996 and president of South Oakland Anesthesia Associates from 2000-2005. Dr. Merkle had a thirst for learning and teaching, which he shared with all who knew him. His remarkable calm, kind and professional demeanor made him an asset to both his medical team and patients alike. While greatly respected by his col- leagues for his superb clinical skills and dedication, his greatest source of joy came from being a deeply committed son, husband, father and grandfather. He shared 50 happy years with his wife, Linda, building a fam- ily and traveling the world together. He treasured spending time with his daughters, sons-in-law and grand- children, taking family vacations, skiing, fishing, gardening, golfing and playing tennis. He deeply valued his longstanding bonds with many close friends and the families of his sons-in-law. He shared his enthusiasm and optimism for life with everyone around him. Dr. Merkle is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Merkle of West Bloomfield; daughters and sons-in- law, Dr. Laura and Michael Gruskin of Franklin, Dr. Suzanne Merkle and Dr. Alan Silverman of Bloomfield Hills, Karen Merkle and Michael Finkelstein of West Bloomfield; grand- children Eric, Alexander and Nikolas Gruskin, Brittany, Bradley and Jenna Silverman, and Alexandra, Jackson and Julia Finkelstein; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. Lary and Janice Berkower, and Dr. Morrie Dubin; many loving nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. He was the son of the late Sam and the late Elsie Merkle; son-in-law of the late Saul and the late Alice Berkower; brother of the late Phyllis Dubin. She possessed an indomitable spirit and was a nurtur- ing matriarch to her family and those she met at a Boca Raton senior center. Family and friends knew her as the great listener. During her lifetime, she worked with her husband, Jack, in the build- ing business. She also supported and volunteered with many Jewish agen- cies. She was a member of Temple Beth El in Boca Raton. Mrs. Raisin, widow of Jack Raisin, is survived by her children, Joan Peven Smith (Harry) of Coconut Grove, Fla., Lois Arkin of Los Angeles, Calif., Richard Raisin of Apopka, Fla., Judy Singer (Bobby) of Indio, Calif.; her grandchildren, Dr. Debra Peven (Erin Butler), David (Julie) Peven, Shari Singer, Scott Singer, the late Steve Singer (Lisa), Lou Ann Smith (Mark Lenetsky), Joey Smith (Lori) and David Smith (Jill);19 great-grandchil- dren; two great-great-grandchildren; countless nieces and nephews span- ning the country who depended on her ability to listen empathetically to their issues.
