Check This Out:
A Multi-Task Word

W

hen we find a word that will serve a multitude of
functions, we really use it. Why not, if it works.
Such a find is "check."
Should your car's brakes become worn, you would want to
check (curb) your momentum as you drive until you can get
them replaced. To do so, take the car in to a mechanic and have
him check them out (inspect).
You could then drive to the airport for
your next vacation and have your lug-
gage checked in (sent through). It may
not arrive, but that is another matter. Be
aware that you many not write a check
(pay with "paper") to cover the unreal
fees charged by the airlines so have
"plastic" handy. If your flight is delayed
— yes, it could happen — you may have
to check into a hotel (register); be sure to
bring more money so that you can check
out (pay to leave) with limited problems.
When planning any venture, it is a
good idea to check up on (investigate) the
company, the investment, etc., that may
be involved. It is possible to hire people
to run a check to safeguard your input.
Should you decide to dine out some evening, you may be
required, when entering an establishment, to check (leave)

your coat with someone; do not do this with car keys, however,
unless you know the person getting them is a parking valet. If
the garment is a check (squares) pattern, it will be all the less
likely to be taken by mistake.
Should you decide to join a club for recreation, you may
have to check (verify) their policies and check (mark off) an
interests questionnaire. The organization will then check over
(examine) their files to make sure your will be a worthy mem-
ber. Depending on the activities offered, you may check hounds
while hunting (hold them back) or place an opponent's king in
check (have it under attack) in a stirring game of chess.
Let me end with one of my puns: A medieval leader invited
representatives from neighboring countries to a meet and greet.
Not seeing the Slavic emissary knight amid all the brocaded
capes, he made inquiries. His adviser said, "Oh, the Czech is in
the mail."

Nita Cohen is in commercial lending,
and a few years ago she was
unemployed for a short time when
her bank downsized its staff.
"I was looking for ways to keep
busy while I did my job search," Nita
said, "which I mentioned to a friend
at Federation. She suggested I check
out Hebrew Free Loan as a fit for my
experience and my interests."
While the agency doesn't have
day-to-day volunteers because of
the confidential nature of the work,
agency leaders were identifying
dynamic members of the community
to fill Board vacancies. A short while
later, Nita was invited to join.
"This is my first Board experience,"
said Nita, "and it's been rewarding
to take off my commercial banker hat
and use one-to-one people skills.
Coming here as a borrower can be a
scary thing, but I think people should
know we are in this together. We think
of ourselves as a community, not
adversaries. If someone is willing to
put themselves out there and make
their lives better, at HFL we will put
ourselves out there with them."
Nita encourages everyone to find
out what HFL has to offer. "Don't
assume that your need isn't important
enough for HFL. While some requests
are more urgent than others, we
help people in many different situations.
HFL is here for you."
