T

here's big news in B'nai B'rith
bowling.
The Downtown Fox League
has merged with its former next-door
neighbor, the Morganthau L'Chayim/
Zeiger-Gross/Jewish War Veterans
League.
Now called the Downtown Fox-
MLZG League, it has 24 teams and a
bright future.
League President Justin Kaplan said
all 12 Downtown Fox League teams
from the 2013-2014 season returned
for the 2014-2015 season.
An infusion of about 80 percent of
the teams from the MLZG League and
vigorous recruiting by Kaplan brought
in the other dozen teams.
Kaplan served as Downtown Fox
League president the past two years.
He oversees the merged league; the
boards of the two leagues have com-
bined.
"It was important to preserve the
legacy of the (MLZG League):' Kaplan
said. "That's why their board is work-
ing with our board, and their name is
in the new league's name
The bowling night transition
between the two leagues should
be seamless. MLZG bowled at 7:15
p.m. Mondays at Drakeshire Lanes
in Farmington Hills. Downtown Fox
bowled and the new league bowls at
7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Drakeshire.
"This is going to be a great league
Kaplan said. "The guys range in age
from 18 to 80-something and it's a 90
percent handicap league, so the lower-
average bowlers can really help their
teams.
"More teams means more fun
and, of course, bigger payouts:' the
Commerce Township resident said.
Opening night Tuesday (Sept. 30)
had a somber moment. There was a
"one last rack" tribute to Downtown
Fox League patriarch Seymour Zate,
who died July 5 at age 81. His family
was there.
Zate bowled in the league for more
than 60 years and worked tirelessly to
keep it alive. The league's champion-
ship trophy bears his name.
"Sy meant so much to the league
and B'nai B'rith," said Kaplan, 36,
Zate's cousin.
Greg Sobol is one of the transplants
from the MLGZ League in the new
league. The 37-year-old Berkley resi-
dent said the merger makes perfect
sense because the MLGZ League was
struggling to keep bowlers and grow.

The late Seymour Zate with the
Downtown Fox League team champi-
on trophy named in his honor at last
season's league awards banquet

"This is not a big change for the guys
in our league. Just a different night to
bowl:' he said. "The merger is some-
thing that had to happen. It isn't a bad
thing. We're all part of B'nai B'rith, and
we're making B'nai B'rith stronger:'
Sobol is continuing to bowl on a
team named the Hebrew Nationals
with his father, longtime B'nai B'rith
bowler Dennis Sobol, along with Chris
Lawler and Dov Schuchman.
Jordan Weiss bowled in the
Downtown Fox League the last three
seasons, and he's a part of the new
league.
The 28-year-old West Bloomfield
resident said he kept coming back to
the Downtown Fox League because
he had a great time and he's looking
forward to competing in the expanded
league.
"More bowlers means you don't keep
bowling against the same teams:' he
said.
This is the fourth year he's bowled
with Jeremy Crane and Michael
Weinstein on the same team. Lowell
Weiss is their new teammate.
"We're not related:' Jordan Weiss
said. "We've been friends since high
school. Lowell went to [Bloomfield
Hills] Andover and I went to
[Frankel] Jewish Academy. We met
through BBYO [B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization]:'
League bowling will continue week-
ly until Dec. 16. After a break, bowling
will resume Jan. 6 and go through
March 31, followed by a post-season
awards banquet.
The season is split into two halves,
with the first half ending Dec. 16.
