udaism is our rich wisdom

tradition; it lights the path
toward meeting the chal-
lenges of our time said Sue Salinger,
new education director at Temple
Emanu-El in Oak Park. "This temple
has a unique, rich history of engage-
ment in social activ-
ism. I want to apply
that lens to our cur-
riculum."
For this year, that
means a temple-
wide focus on food
justice, examining
how and what we
Sue Salinger
consume, and our
interrelatedness to
each other, our neighborhoods and to
the planet.
A Southfield native, Salinger
returns from Boulder, Colo., where
she taught and produced media
for social and spiritual change
before becoming a Jewish educator.
Salinger studied with Rabbi Zalman
Schachter-Shalomi, the late founder
of the Jewish Renewal movement.
This experience fueled her passion for
Jewish education's ability to empower

students to create values-based lives.
Boulder is a national laboratory
for experimental Jewish teaching
methods, and Salinger is adding con-
templative, participatory classroom
tactics into Emanu-El's program.
This year's post-b'nai mitzvah pro-
gram centers on Torah-based envi-
ronmental interconnectedness and is
a great example of what change looks
like at this temple.
"Our first unit looks at water;
Salinger says. "We will explore what
Torah tells us about water and how
we, as a temple, might better use this
resource.
"We will meet environmentalists
and activists working to address our
local water system and its challenges:"
At the end of each unit, Salinger
and her team will take students into
the field — or, in this case, river —
for firsthand experiential learning.
"This theme provides a meaning-
ful and relevant Jewish connection to
present issues, like the recent floods
and the water shutoffs in Detroit,"
Salinger said.

re you a single Jewish parent
in Metro Detroit? Imagine
coming home to celebrate
Shabbat and having a delicious kosher
meal waiting for you and your family.
Introducing SPARC's new program:
Shabbat on the Spot.
Being a single Jewish parent presents
some new challenges. The Shabbat on
the Spot program wants to reduce some
of them by enabling you to focus on the
joy of Shabbat family time together.
• Three times a year, SPARC
(Single Parent Alliance & Resource
Connection) will offer a free Shabbat
dinner for any single Jewish parent who
is registered with SPARC and signs up
for this program.
• Register with SPARC at
jewishdetroit.org/parentform.
• Dinner will be catered by Daniel
Kohn of Unique Kosher Catering and
will consist of a healthy, traditional
Shabbat meal with vegetarian options.
It will also include challah, grape juice,
candles, a Shabbat guide, Jewish PJ
Library books for your children (age-
appropriate) and other delights.
• Meals can be ordered based on the

number of people in your immedi-
ate family. You can also invite another
SPARC family to join you.
• You can list, in order of preference,
which dates your prefer but only one
meal date per family.
Shabbat on the Spot dinners will be
available on the following dates:
• Friday, Nov. 21, 2014
• Friday, Jan. 23, 2015
• Friday, March 20, 2015
This program is on a first-come,
first-served basis, as only 25 families
can be accommodated per date.
SPARC is a group of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Alliance for Jewish Education and
JFamily department. This program was
the inspiration of the SPARC Advisory
Committee Chair Dr. Lynda Giles, who
heads this committed group of lay lead-
ers who give generously of their time
to support and provide vision for the
SPARC program.

SPARC or the Shabbat on the Spot
program, contact Amy Newman at
