ShabbOS

The Shabbos Project 2014 — Keeping It Together!
Mark your calendars for Oct. 24- 25.

Barbara Lewis I Contributing Writer

C

all it Shabbos or Shabbat or even Sabbath. Just do it —
together!
Join your fellow Jews throughout Metropolitan Detroit
— and in dozens of cities around the world — for the Shabbos
Project Oct. 24-25. Experience Shabbat together.
The Shabbos project started last year in South Africa, and most
of that country's 70,000 Jews joined in. Jewish neighborhoods
were quiet, as people walked instead of drove and enjoyed Shab-
bat meals with friends.

THE SABBATH IS A GIFT

Shabbat is a gift: a day off from the cares and worries of the rest
of the week.
For those unfamiliar with them, the laws of Shabbat can seem
complicated, overwhelming and daunting.
The Shabbos Project has a guide that tells you everything you
need to know about keeping Shabbat in a practical and user-
friendly way.
Get it online at www.theshabbosproject.org/unofficial-
guide/, or call (248) 583-2476, ext. 267 to request a copy.
There's also a Shabbos Project Toolkit that includes prayers,
inspiring stories and explanations of how and why to observe
Shabbat. The toolkit will enrich your understanding of the various
practices and adding layers of meaning. You can get it online at
www.theshabbosproject.org//toolkit .

START BY MAKING CHALLAH!

Shabbos Project 2 014 on YouTube!

Women and girls can get a jump on the Shabbos Project by at-
tending a free challah workshop at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 on
the second floor of the Emagine Theatre in Royal Oak. Free park-
ing is available on the second floor of the theatre parking deck.
Learn about the laws, customs and mystical power of challah
— one of the three commandments specifically for women — and
make a batch of challah to take home. The aroma of baking bread
will suffuse your home and get your entire family in the mood
for Shabbat. When women make challah together, miracles can
happen!

UNPLUG AND UNWIND

If you are new to experiencing Shabbat, plan ahead to make this a
true day of rest. Here are some things you can do:

• Shop for food and anything else you need before Friday eve-
