atthew Chayet won gold
and silver medals last
month at the JCC Maccabi
Games & ArtsFest.
The silver medal was for being an
assistant coach on a second-place
Detroit 14U boys basketball team.
The gold medal came from the
Rockland County (N.Y.) team that beat
Detroit in the championship game at
Birmingham Seaholm High School.
That was a nice medal haul for a
14-year-old who can't play competitive
sports because of medical issues.
"Matthew has been on Cloud 9 for
weeks; said Fawn Chayet, his mother,
who still is quite emotional about the
amazing story that unfolded late in the
gold-medal game.
Nobody in the stands at Seaholm —
including Matthew Chayet's parents,
Adam and Fawn — knew what Detroit
coach Jeremy Fishman was planning
to do.
"We went to every game to support
the team. But we had no idea what was
going to happen; Fawn said.
With about 21/2 minutes left and
Rockland County far ahead, Fishman
sent Matthew in the game.
"I'd never seen Matthew play, but he
deserved a chance. He's a great guy;
Fishman said.
Before he left to a huge ovation
with about 20 seconds to go, Matthew
scored three baskets on two 10-foot
jumpers and a layup and he dished
out an assist. Rockland County players
gave him the space he needed.
"Matthew loves basketball his
mother said. "He knows what to do on
the court."
Fishman said he had competitive
players on his team and they were dis-
traught about the impending defeat.
"But by the time the game was over,
they'd forgotten they'd lost; he said.
"They'd just experienced something
out of a movie:'
Detroit faced Rockland County for
the 14U lower-bracket championship.
After round-robin play, the 15 teams
in the tournament were seeded into
upper and lower brackets.
"Rockland should have played in
the upper bracket. They were one of
the top five teams in the tournament;
Fishman said. "I thought our game
might not be close, and I'd have an
opportunity to put Matthew in there7
As the game progressed and
Rockland County pulled further and
further ahead, Fishman revealed his
plan for Matthew to Detroit delegation
Matthew Chayet
head Franci Silver and the Rockland
County coach.
Both gave him their full support.
And Rockland County gave Matthew
one of its gold medals.
Matthew joined the Detroit team
this summer after Silver talked to
Fishman about him.
He was at practices a week before
the Maccabi Games, he participated
in the opening ceremonies with the
team at the Fox Theatre in Downtown
Detroit, and he was in uniform during
games.
A new eighth-grader at West Hills
Middle School in Bloomfield Hills,
Matthew already had friends there
before school started. Five of his
Maccabi Games teammates also attend
West Hills.
"Being a part of the team was a
wonderful experience for Matthew;
Fawn Chayet said. "Jeremy and the
boys were so kind to him."
Jackson Blau, Aaron Forbes, A.J.
Gilbert, Max Goldstein, Noah Kellman,
Ari Singer, Max Wittenberg, Ari Yaker,
Justin Yaker and Corey Zimmerman
were on the team's roster.
At age 20, Fishman probably was the
youngest coach at the Maccabi Games.
And he coached a second Detroit 14U
boys basketball team.
But he's a Maccabi Games veteran.
He played basketball for Detroit for
three years, winning silver medals in
San Antonio and Denver.
He also played basketball for
Bloomfield Hills Andover High School
and Olivet College, and he's now a
full-time student at Grand Valley State
University.
"I've had great relationships with
my coaches; Fishman said. "Coaching
is more than X's and 0's, and it's not
about egos. It's about helping those on
your team become better at their craft
and better people:' ❑
